The Care Assistant role is pivotal in providing practical, emotional, and physical support to older individuals residing in a care home setting. The primary objective is to help residents maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life through personalized care. Working collaboratively with colleagues, the Care Assistant ensures the delivery of safe, compassionate, and effective care in line with individual care plans. The role may also involve supporting other service user groups as directed by the Registered Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Personal Care & Support: Deliver personal care according to individual care plans. Assist with washing, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene. Aid residents with mobility and safe movement within the home. Support nutritional needs through assistance with eating and drinking. Encourage independence and daily living skills.
  • Emotional & Social Support: Foster positive relationships with residents. Provide emotional support and companionship. Assist residents during illness, distress, or end-of-life care. Uphold dignity, respect, choice, and individuality.
  • Resident Wellbeing: Encourage participation in activities and social interactions. Monitor and report changes in health or wellbeing. Support achievement of care plan outcomes. Maintain a safe and positive living environment.
  • Record Keeping: Keep accurate and up-to-date records. Complete daily notes and care documentation. Promptly report accidents, incidents, and safeguarding issues. Adhere to organisational procedures for record-keeping.
  • Health & Safety: Follow all Health & Safety policies and procedures. Engage in regular safety checks. Adhere to infection control, food hygiene, and fire safety protocols. Ensure the safety of residents, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Moving & Handling: Participate in training for moving and handling. Safely use specialist equipment like hoists and transfer boards. Follow individual moving and handling plans.
  • Domestic Duties: Assist with light domestic tasks as needed. Help with bed making and maintaining cleanliness. Support meal service and household activities.
  • Team Working: Collaborate with colleagues and healthcare professionals. Attend meetings, supervision sessions, and training. Communicate effectively with families and partner agencies. Maintain professional boundaries.

Requirements

  • Qualifications: Essential: Good literacy and communication skills; ability to read and write English. Desirable: NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care or willingness to achieve it.
  • Knowledge: Essential: Understanding of older people's needs, safeguarding, confidentiality, and health and safety. Desirable: Knowledge of person-centred care, moving and handling, dementia, or age-related conditions.
  • Experience: Essential: Experience in caring for older people and maintaining accurate records. Desirable: Experience in local authority or residential care settings.
  • Skills & Competencies: Essential: Strong communication, compassion, confidentiality, observation, and reporting skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage time effectively, and remain calm under pressure.
