3 Month Contract With A local Authority
Job Purpose
To carry out the servicing, maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of a wide range of vehicles, plant, and specialist equipment, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with statutory regulations, DVSA requirements, and operator licence obligations. The role requires a flexible, multi-skilled approach to support the operational needs of the Transport Workshop and wider service.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine safety inspections, servicing, maintenance, and repairs on fleet vehicles, plant, and specialist equipment.
- Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic system faults.
- Prepare vehicles and equipment for MOT, DVSA, and other statutory inspections.
- Carry out welding and fabrication work as required.
- Steam clean and pressure wash vehicles and plant before inspection, servicing, or repair activities.
- Accurately complete maintenance records, inspection reports, and associated documentation in line with DVSA regulations and operator licence requirements.
- Use electronic fleet management systems to record and manage maintenance activities.
- Support the training and development of apprentices and junior team members.
- Investigate and resolve complex vehicle and equipment breakdowns.
- Undertake vehicle diagnostics, including work on electric vehicles where qualified.
- Carry out MOT testing, private hire, and hackney carriage inspections where appropriately qualified.
- Perform quality assurance checks on completed inspections and maintenance activities.
- Drive a range of vehicles, including HGVs, when required.
- Participate in out-of-hours call-out rotas and agreed holiday working arrangements.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures, Council policies, and industry standards.
Requirements
- Relevant qualification in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent mechanical engineering discipline.
- Proven experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing commercial vehicles, plant, or specialist equipment.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs.
- Experience maintaining accurate service and inspection records.
- Understanding of DVSA regulations and operator licence compliance requirements.
- Welding skills and experience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence.
- MOT Tester qualification.
- HGV licence.
- Experience working with electric vehicle diagnostic systems.
- Forklift Truck qualification (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience using electronic fleet management systems.
- Experience mentoring or supporting apprentices.
