The Shunter Driver plays a crucial role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of the Council’s waste transfer station and depot. This position involves vehicle shunting duties, operating the weighbridge system, and assisting with general site operations. The role is essential for ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, environmental permits, and Council policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Shunting and Yard Operations: Safely manoeuvre waste collection vehicles, trailers, and associated equipment within the depot and waste transfer station. Position vehicles for loading, unloading, washing, and maintenance activities. Conduct routine vehicle safety checks and report defects in accordance with Council fleet procedures. Maintain safe traffic flow within the site, ensuring clear segregation of pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Weighbridge Operations: Operate the site weighbridge system for all inbound and outbound vehicles. Accurately record vehicle weights, waste types, origins, and destinations in line with Duty of Care requirements. Issue weighbridge tickets and maintain accurate records (both electronic and manual). Liaise with drivers, supervisors, and managers to resolve discrepancies or operational issues.
  • Waste Transfer Station Operations: Direct vehicles to appropriate tipping and loading areas in accordance with site rules. Monitor waste loads to ensure proper segregation and identify non-compliant waste. Assist with loading bulk haulage vehicles, containers, and transfer trailers. Maintain high standards of site cleanliness and housekeeping.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Work in accordance with all health and safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work. Comply with environmental permits and Council environmental policies. Wear and promote the correct use of PPE at all times. Report accidents, incidents, hazards, or near misses in line with procedures. Support emergency procedures, including fire safety, spill response, and evacuations.
  • General Duties: Assist with routine inspections and basic maintenance tasks. Communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and the public as required. Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required.

Experience Required

  • Experience working in a waste management, depot, or similar operational environment.
  • Experience in vehicle maneuvering or shunting within a controlled yard.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • HGV Licence (Category C or C+E) – Essential.
  • Basic IT skills, including data entry and use of weighbridge systems.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements in operational environments.
  • Ability to follow procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Previous experience operating a weighbridge.
  • Plant or machinery certifications (e.g., FLT, loading shovel, telehandler).
  • Knowledge of waste legislation and waste segregation requirements.
