Job Description

  • 3 months contract with a Local Authority
  • Job Purpose

To support the efficient collection of household, recycling, and commercial waste by loading refuse and recycling materials onto collection vehicles safely and effectively.

The Refuse Loader will work as part of a waste collection crew, ensuring collections are completed on schedule while maintaining high standards of health and safety, customer service, and environmental responsibility.

The role requires a physically fit, reliable, and hardworking individual who can work outdoors in all weather conditions and contribute positively to a team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect household, recycling, and commercial waste from designated collection points.
  • Load waste and recycling materials onto collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Return bins and containers to appropriate locations following collection.
  • Assist the driver in completing daily collection rounds within agreed timescales.
  • Ensure all collections are completed in accordance with service standards and operational procedures.
  • Health & Safety
  • Follow all health and safety policies, procedures, and safe working practices.
  • Undertake manual handling activities safely and correctly.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
  • Report accidents, incidents, hazards, and near misses promptly.
  • Help maintain a safe working environment for colleagues and the public.

  • Work effectively as part of a collection crew.
  • Assist colleagues to ensure routes are completed efficiently.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with drivers, supervisors, and team members.
  • Support operational requirements and service delivery needs.
  • Customer Service
  • Provide a courteous and professional service to residents and members of the public.
  • Represent the organisation positively at all times.
  • Report any issues affecting collections to the relevant supervisor.
  • General Duties
  • Assist with vehicle checks and cleanliness where required.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and drivers.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role and grade.

Experience

  • Experience working in a physically demanding environment.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Previous experience as a Refuse Loader, Waste Operative, Recycling Operative, Labourer, or similar role.
  • Experience working within waste management, environmental services, or local authority operations.
  • Experience carrying out manual handling duties.

Qualifications

  • Good understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Health and Safety training.

Shift Pattern

Monday to Friday between

PAYE Rate

  • National Minimum Wage, increasing to
  • £13.88 per hour after 12 weeks
  • PPE and relevant training will be provided.
  • The role involves regular lifting, carrying, walking, and manual handling activities.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Immediate starts may be available for suitable candidates.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to maintain high standards of attendance, teamwork, customer service, and health and safety compliance.
