This 3-month contract role involves operating HGV Class 2 vehicles and supporting the delivery of environmental and waste services across the city.

The successful candidate will drive refuse or operational vehicles safely, supervise crew activities, ensure efficient completion of daily routes, and uphold high standards of safety, cleanliness, and customer service while representing the Council professionally.

Key Responsibilities

  • HGV Driving & Vehicle Operations
  • Operate HGV Class 2 vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and roadworthiness checks.
  • Report vehicle defects promptly.
  • Maintain compliance with road traffic legislation and Council procedures.
  • Operate vehicles responsibly and professionally.
  • Crew Supervision
  • Lead and support a small operational crew.
  • Allocate work and provide daily instructions.
  • Monitor crew performance and productivity.
  • Promote safe working practices at all times.
  • Ensure work is completed to service standards and schedules.
  • Service Delivery
  • Deliver environmental services efficiently and safely.
  • Complete daily routes within service requirements.
  • Respond to operational issues and escalate concerns where required.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout service delivery.
  • Health & Safety
  • Ensure compliance with all Health & Safety legislation and procedures.
  • Promote safe systems of work in public and traffic environments.
  • Report accidents, incidents, hazards, and near misses.
  • Protect the safety of colleagues, residents, and members of the public.
  • Customer Service
  • Communicate professionally with residents and service users.
  • Handle enquiries courteously and effectively.

Essential Qualifications

  • Valid Category C (HGV Class 2) Driving Licence.
  • Driver CPC Qualification.
  • Digital Tachograph Card.

Essential Knowledge

  • Knowledge of road traffic legislation and safe driving practices.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of vehicle inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Understanding of customer service principles.

Essential Experience

  • Experience driving HGV Class 2 vehicles.
  • Experience carrying out vehicle safety checks.
  • Experience in waste management, environmental services, logistics, or similar operational environments.
  • Experience supervising or leading small teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous local authority experience.
  • Experience operating refuse collection vehicles.
  • Experience using fleet management or in-cab technology systems.
