The Facilities Officer (Multi Skilled Operative) is responsible for delivering efficient, effective, and high-quality repairs, maintenance, and improvement works across leisure facilities within the London Borough of Southwark. The role supports the safe operation, appearance, and functionality of leisure centres by undertaking a broad range of multi-skilled maintenance activities including carpentry, plumbing, decorating, grounds maintenance, roofing repairs, and general building works.
The postholder will self-manage workloads, respond to reactive and urgent maintenance issues, liaise with Leisure Centre Managers and contractors, and ensure facilities remain safe, compliant, and welcoming for residents, visitors, and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out a broad range of multi-skilled repair, maintenance, and renewal works across leisure facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, glazing, painting and decorating, plastering, tiling, and general building repairs.
- Undertake roofing maintenance works including identifying and repairing leaks, clearing guttering, replacing damaged materials, and improving insulation where required.
- Perform day-to-day plumbing and minor electrical works safely and effectively to minimise disruption to services.
- Repair and maintain equipment, fixtures, fittings, and appliances to ensure safe operation and compliance with service standards and health and safety regulations.
- Undertake general landscaping and external maintenance duties including lawn maintenance, hedge trimming, fence repairs, and upkeep of outdoor spaces.
- Support the delivery of the Facilities Management reactive maintenance programme across multiple leisure centres.
- Diagnose faults, identify remedial works required, and escalate specialist or major repairs where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with Leisure Centre Managers, contractors, and specialist trades to ensure timely and effective completion of works.
- Respond to emergency and urgent repair requests to maintain safe access and continuity of services within leisure facilities.
- Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, Building Regulations, Fire Regulations, risk assessments, method statements, and council procedures.
- Use all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment appropriately and maintain safe working practices at all times.
- Report hazards, incidents, accidents, and unsafe conditions promptly and take proactive steps to maintain safe environments for staff and customers.
- Be responsible for the safe use, storage, and security of allocated vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials.
- Maintain stock levels of materials, tools, and parts required for service delivery and ensure resources are used effectively and economically.
- Read and interpret work specifications, instructions, and drawings to complete work to required standards and timescales.
- Provide professional and customer-focused service to residents, staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Liaise effectively with operational managers, contractors, and external agencies to support the smooth operation of leisure facilities.
- Contribute to maintaining safe, secure, clean, and welcoming environments for all leisure centre users.
Requirements
- Proven experience carrying out multi-skilled maintenance and repair work across a range of building trades.
- Experience within facilities management, building maintenance, or property repairs environments.
- Good knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, Building Regulations, Fire Regulations, and safe systems of work.
- Experience working within occupied public buildings or customer-facing environments.
- Ability to diagnose maintenance issues and determine effective repair solutions.
- Strong practical skills across multiple trades including carpentry, plumbing, decorating, and general maintenance.
- Ability to manage workloads independently and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with contractors, managers, and colleagues.
- Problem-solving skills with a proactive and flexible approach to work.
- Ability to read and interpret technical instructions and work specifications.
- Relevant trade qualification or equivalent practical experience in building maintenance or construction trades is desirable.
- Health & Safety related training or certification is desirable.
- Full UK driving licence required.
- Willingness to undertake out-of-hours work when required.

- Ability to work across multiple leisure sites within the borough.
- City & Guilds Plumbing NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, or
- City & Guilds Carpentry NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
- City & Guilds Multi-Skilled NVQ Level 3 or equivalent is desirable.

- Hours per week: 36 hours per week (including some out-of-hours working when required)
- Location: London Borough of Southwark Γ’ Leisure Centres
- Payment: Bi-weekly payments
