To deliver a high-quality environmental health and public protection service across the borough by enforcing environmental health legislation, undertaking complex investigations, and supporting the Council’s corporate priorities. The Senior Environmental Health Officer will lead on specialist casework, provide expert advice to businesses and residents, and support the development of junior officers within the Environmental Health team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of commercial premises and enforce relevant environmental health legislation.
- Investigate complaints, incidents, and complex environmental health cases.
- Prepare detailed reports, case files, witness statements, and prosecution documentation.
- Lead and deliver targeted enforcement operations and specialist projects across areas including:
- Health & Safety
- Food Standards
- Infectious Disease Control
- Licensing Enforcement
- Manage complex investigations through to resolution, formal enforcement action, or prosecution where appropriate.
- Provide professional advice and guidance to businesses, stakeholders, and members of the public to promote compliance with legislation and best practice.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, and local businesses.
- Support, coach, and provide technical guidance to junior officers and colleagues.
- Contribute to service development, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
- Participate in evening, weekend, and out-of-hours work where required.
Requirements
- Hold an Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) approved qualification, such as an MSc, BSc (Hons), or Diploma in Environmental Health awarded by EHRB or REHIS.
- Be EHORB registered or have successfully completed the CIEH Assessment of Professional Competence, Assessment of Professional Development, or equivalent recognised pathway to Registered Environmental Health Practitioner status.
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
- Strong experience within environmental health enforcement and public protection services.
- Sound knowledge of environmental health legislation and regulatory procedures.
- Experience managing complex investigations and enforcement cases.
- Ability to prepare detailed reports and prosecution documentation.
- Strong communication, organisational, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload effectively.
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior staff is desirable.
