To provide professional, authoritative health and safety advice and guidance across a large and diverse Local Authority. The postholder will support managers and employees in maintaining high standards of health and safety, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and best practice, and promoting a proactive health and safety culture across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional health and safety advice, guidance, and support to managers and employees across the organisation.
  • Support managers in undertaking and reviewing risk assessments and implementing appropriate control measures.
  • Conduct health and safety audits, workplace inspections, and compliance reviews across a diverse range of services and operational environments.
  • Lead and support accident, incident, and near-miss investigations, identifying root causes and recommending appropriate preventative actions.
  • Monitor compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and recognised best practice.
  • Review, develop, and implement health and safety policies, procedures, guidance, and management systems.
  • Provide advice on the practical application of health and safety legislation within a complex Local Authority environment.
  • Deliver health and safety training, briefings, information, and guidance to managers, employees, and other stakeholders.
  • Support contractor management activities, including health and safety compliance and monitoring.
  • Provide advice and support in relation to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) and associated duties.
  • Support corporate health and safety initiatives and contribute to the continuous improvement of health and safety standards.
  • Produce accurate reports, analyse accident and incident data, identify trends, and recommend measures to reduce risks and prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with senior managers, employees, Trade Unions, external agencies, contractors, and enforcement bodies.
  • Provide appropriate support and professional advice in response to health and safety concerns, incidents, and regulatory matters.
  • Travel efficiently to operational sites across Coventry to undertake inspections, investigations, meetings, and other health and safety activities as required.
  • Keep up to date with changes in health and safety legislation, guidance, and professional best practice.

Requirements

  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (essential).
  • IOSH membership, such as CMIOSH, GradIOSH, or actively working towards Chartered status.
  • Significant professional experience in a health and safety advisory role, ideally within a large, complex organisation or Local Authority.
  • Proven experience undertaking health and safety audits, workplace inspections, accident investigations, and risk assessments.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of interpreting and applying health and safety legislation.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and implementing health and safety policies, procedures, and management systems.
  • Proven ability to provide clear, practical, and authoritative health and safety advice to managers and employees.
  • Experience delivering health and safety training and guidance to a range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and experience of CDM Regulations and contractor management.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills, including the ability to analyse incident trends and recommend preventative measures.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior managers, Trade Unions, contractors, external agencies, and enforcement bodies.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and provide a responsive professional service.
  • Ability and willingness to travel efficiently to sites across Coventry as required.

  • Location: Coventry
  • Hours per Week: 37.00
  • Working Arrangements: Hybrid – 1–2 days on-site, plus 1 office day per week for team meetings
