9 - 10 Month Contract with A Local Authority

Job Purpose

To undertake the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the Island’s public rights of way network to ensure safe and convenient access for public use. The role involves working individually and as part of a maintenance team carrying out a range of countryside, grounds maintenance, and infrastructure maintenance activities across outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and upkeep works across the public rights of way network.
  • Operate and maintain grass cutting, hedge cutting, and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Cut back hedges, clear rough verges, and undertake general vegetation management.
  • Fell small trees, remove branches, and clear fallen trees where required.
  • Install and maintain public rights of way posts, signage, stiles, gates, bridges, steps, and fencing.
  • Construct and maintain footpaths and drainage systems.
  • Carry out ditching, site clearance, and general countryside maintenance activities.
  • Support snow clearance operations and assist with storm or flood damage clearance when required.
  • Drive and maintain 4x4 vehicles in accordance with driving standards and safety requirements.
  • Complete daily vehicle and machinery safety checks including oil, water, tyres, and lights.
  • Work safely in outdoor environments and comply with Health & Safety procedures and risk assessments.
  • Communicate professionally with members of the public and landowners while carrying out duties.

Requirements

  • Practical experience in countryside, agricultural, grounds maintenance, or rights of way maintenance environments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety procedures and risk assessments.
  • Ability to safely operate strimmers, chain saws, pole saws, and hand tools.
  • Full UK driving licence with ability to drive 4x4 vehicles.
  • Relevant licences and certifications for operating machinery and equipment.
  • Chainsaw and cross-cutting certification desirable/required.
  • GCSE-level qualifications or equivalent practical experience.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with tact and patience when dealing with the public and landowners.
  • Physically fit and able to walk up to six miles per day in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a lone worker when required.
