As a Community Prevention Officer specialising in Prevention, Support and Solutions, you will be part of Westminster’s Housing Solutions and Homelessness Service, playing a key role in stopping homelessness before it begins. You will work closely with clients, partners and the wider community, delivering early‑intervention activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide specialist advice and guidance to service‑users about accessing support services, including signposting, referrals and community outreach.
- Conduct regular check‑ins, assess risk and deliver preventative actions to keep people from becoming homeless.
- Respond to safeguarding concerns and gather, verify and analyse evidence to support fair decision‑making.
- Draft high‑impact formal correspondence and reports in a statutory or regulated setting.
- Split time between office work and community engagement, acting as a visible, empowering advocate for the people we serve.
- Negotiate with landlords, mediate financial difficulties, and secure practical solutions that allow residents to remain in their homes.
- Collaborate with officers across the department and other Council departments to maximise residents’ income and sustain tenancies in the long term.
- Maintain a caring, empathetic approach, working sensitively with vulnerable households.
Qualifications
- Established professional experience supporting people facing homelessness with housing needs.
- Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and relevant legislation, including the Homelessness Code of Guidance, the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, the Localism Act 2011, the Equalities Act 2010, the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, and the Council’s Housing Allocation Scheme.
- Ability to utilise available schemes, resources and pathways to secure appropriate support for clients.
- Strong communication skills, capable of drafting formal correspondence and reports.
- Experience negotiating with landlords and resolving tenancy issues.
- Capacity to work independently, make sound judgement, and persevere in challenging situations.
