We’re looking for a Head of Safety, Health & Environment contractor to join us on a 6-month basis. This role is critical to shaping a positive, people‑centred safety culture across a complex UK operation, leading by example and inspiring teams to put Health, Safety and Wellbeing at the heart of everything they do.

You will work collaboratively with senior leaders, operational teams and external contractors to drive continuous improvement, support meaningful culture change and ensure excellence in SHE strategy, compliance and performance. It’s a highly influential role for a confident, values‑led leader who thrives on connection, collaboration and making a lasting impact.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading and nurturing a high‑performing regional SHE team, creating an environment where people feel supported, developed and empowered to do their best work.
  • Partnering closely with senior leaders and operational teams to shape a strong, values‑led health, safety and wellbeing culture that goes beyond compliance and truly puts people first.
  • Guiding and supporting contractors across their full lifecycle, ensuring safe, capable delivery through robust planning, assurance and continuous improvement.
  • Driving meaningful, sustainable improvements to SHE policies, systems and behaviours, using insight, collaboration and best practice to raise standards across the network.
  • Influencing change across a complex business through clear communication, thoughtful leadership and a hands‑on approach to coaching, assurance and project delivery.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A visible, values‑led leadership style that builds trust, inspires others and champions a positive, people‑first approach to health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Strong strategic thinking paired with practical delivery, enabling you to guide complex teams and contractors towards safer, smarter and more sustainable ways of working.
  • The ability to collaborate with confidence at senior level, influencing culture change through empathy, clear communication and credible expertise.
  • Deep professional knowledge of SHE, combined with curiosity and openness to continuous improvement, innovation and shared learning.
  • A calm, resilient presence with the emotional intelligence to coach, mentor and bring people with you through change in a complex operational environment.

Qualifications

  • Proven leadership of SHE delivery within large, complex operating environments.
  • Recognised Health & Safety subject matter expert, providing proactive and reactive advice in line with Regulation 7 of the MHASAWR99.
  • Partnered with operational Directors to develop effective compliance and improvement plans aligned to corporate and customer strategies.
  • Acted as a commercially focused, business-minded partner on Health & Safety matters.
  • Collaborated across the organisation to share best-practice SHE solutions.
  • Drove sustainable culture change through strategic planning of SHE activities and resources.
  • Developed and implemented new ways of working to improve SHE performance.
