At the City of York Council our ambition is to maintain a clean, green and well‑maintained city, reduce waste and drive up recycling. As an Environmental Services Officer, you will work to provide an efficient and effective waste collection service, together with a high standard of maintenance of public spaces.
A key part of this role is using national waste strategy and policy to inform plans for waste collection, disposal, waste minimisation and recycling. You’ll be responsible for ensuring waste management schemes are implemented effectively and that legal requirements are upheld.
The role combines elements of waste management and public realm working, so an understanding of local and national environmental policies is essential. You should be confident speaking to members of the public, local councillors and housing associations to identify and overcome problems arising in the city, tackling day‑to‑day issues alongside project work to improve the overall service provided.
You must have strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate and explain ideas to key stakeholders, and the capacity to advise the council and other relevant bodies on the likely impact of new legislation, policies, and initiatives.
The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities, and promote continuous learning and development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings. This post is suitable as a job sharing position. Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. The contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
