We are expanding our Transport Projects team and are seeking 4 Assistant Project Managers to help deliver improvements that make a real difference in our city. York is a place that offers a truly unique blend of historic character and forward‑looking infrastructure that makes it an energising place for any Project Engineering or Project Management professional to further their career, from Roman walls and medieval streets to Victorian rail heritage, with an active commitment to sustainable mobility, smart‑city innovation, and major regeneration projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the work and delivery of a diverse and exciting portfolio of transport projects, reporting to a Senior Project Manager or Programme Manager.
  • Active travel programme.
  • Continued rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
  • Expansion of park and ride sites.
  • Complex road safety improvement projects and school streets.
  • The council’s largest major roads project – York Outer Ring Road Dualling.
  • Provision and delivery of a high‑quality, client‑responsive service.

Career Path

Start at Grade 8, with a clear pathway to Grade 9 once progression criteria are met. Experienced Assistant Project Managers who already meet Grade 9 criteria can join directly at that level.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public in spoken English at CEFR level C1.
  • Ability to work in a public‑facing role.
