Right now the council is leading on development of the new Local Plan (York 2045), working lock step with the combined authority, developers, and partners to deliver York Central (45ha brownfield site), develop more affordable housing, and improved transform infrastructure with sustainable transport at its heart. We are also on a journey to be net zero by 2030 with renewable energy strategic business cases underway.

Skills
- Shape and deliver the city’s long‑term spatial, economic, skills and infrastructure ambitions, ensuring sustainable, inclusive and climate‑ready growth that actively supports sustainable development and helps reduce costs for residents.
- Oversee the delivery of major capital programmes across housing, transport, highways, schools, public buildings and regeneration areas.
- Provide leadership for strategic planning, economic development, inward investment, regeneration, strategic infrastructure and the city’s skills agenda.
- Ensure the council’s statutory strategic planning responsibilities are discharged effectively and in line with national legislation, local policy and the Council Plan.
- Lead the city’s engagement with the Combined Authority, government departments, businesses, developers, investors, education and training providers, cultural partners and other key stakeholders to secure investment and align post‑16 skills development with business need.
- Play a key leadership role in engaging with the city’s cultural sector to help drive and promote York’s culture and heritage.
