Located 20 minutes from Winnipeg, Selkirk is a vibrant small city with a hometown feel. The City of Selkirk seeks a Utility Operator to join our team under the direction of the Manager of Utilities. The Operator will perform duties related to the operation, monitoring, repair, and maintenance of all water and wastewater treatment facilities for the corporation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the main equipment at the Water Treatment Plant, raw and treated water pumping systems, Sewage Treatment Plant, U.V. Disinfection System, Decant Lagoon, pumping stations, sewage lift stations, and retention ponds.
  • Perform required tests, checks and sampling for monitoring of treatment processes, including daily free and total chlorine tests, daily turbidity tests, daily calcium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate tests, daily maintenance management reports and notes, and bi‑weekly bacteriological sampling.
  • Maintain and update daily records of operation of treatment facilities, such as daily RW intake and TW production, maintenance management reports and notes, bi‑weekly microbiological sampling, and weekly time and equipment sheets.
  • Operate small equipment and hand tools related to treatment facilities, maintain general building and grounds, assist contractors with repairs, perform routine checks, minor service, cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment, and inform the Manager and/or Mechanic of required maintenance or safety problems.
  • Assist in shutdowns and cleaning of lime clarifiers.
  • Respond to alarms from the SCADA monitoring station at the WTP within 30 minutes when on call; work on‑call shift emergencies (5:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. weekdays and 24 h on weekends) and assist on‑call personnel when required.
  • Provide support and training to other employees and municipal staff as required.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
  • When designated the Operator‑in‑Charge, ensure all operational and legal requirements under the Environment Act – Mandatory Certification are met.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Level III Water Treatment Plant Operator License – Province of Manitoba.
