This is a full-time, on-site Police Officer role located in Portsmouth, VA. The Police Officer is responsible for patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls for service, enforcing local, state, and federal laws, and maintaining public order and safety. Daily duties include conducting traffic stops, issuing citations, performing preliminary and follow-up investigations, collecting and preserving evidence, and preparing accurate incident and arrest reports. The role also involves engaging with community members, participating in crime prevention and outreach activities, and collaborating with other public safety agencies. Police Officers are expected to act with integrity, exercise sound judgment under pressure, and adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and professional standards at all times.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement principles, including experience or training in Police work and general Police operations.
  • Skills in Criminal Investigations, including interviewing, report writing, and coordination with investigators and prosecutors.
  • Ability to properly handle, document, and preserve Evidence in accordance with legal and departmental standards.
  • Understanding of Law Enforcement practices, applicable laws, and constitutional rights, with commitment to fair, impartial, and respectful policing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to meet all physical fitness, medical, psychological, and background requirements for sworn Police Officers, including possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse community members and colleagues.
  • Willingness and availability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed, and to complete required academy and ongoing in-service training.
