About the role:
As the Health & Safety Advisor at City of Portsmouth College (COPC) you will be ensuring that the arrangements onsite serve to adequately protect people and the environment whilst meeting legislative obligations and departmental requirements.
You will continually develop and strengthen the site Safety & Environmental Management Systems whilst leading, motivating and managing relevant staff with H&S responsibilities.
You will provide timely, professional, and effective safety advice and assurance on all site activities and initiatives to COPC staff members as required, including but not limited to material(s) storage, processing, vehicle and plant movements, risk assessment and COSHH.
You will be located at the Highbury campus however, this role will involve travel to other locations across the city including North Harbour, Sixth Form and Arundel campuses.
Key Responsibilities:
- To assist the H&S Manager to support and inspire staff and students on all matters relating to Health, Safety and the Environment within the College.
- Work alongside H&S Manager to arrange, report and review on building related inspections, e.g. TM44, TR19, L8, PAT, LEV and any other statutory inspections.
- Liaise with the H&S Manager in the management of contractors on college premises.
- Assist the H&S Manager with HSE committee meetings.
- Provide/arrange staff safety training, as required, including HSE inductions for new & existing staff.
- Liaise, as required, with staff on matters relating to injury and ill health of staff and students and ensure College procedures relating to recording and reporting are observed.
- Assist staff in undertaking risk assessments for college activities, most especially off-site learning activities, periodically reviewing as required.
- Assist the H&S Manager with safety audits and inspections.
- Assist the H&S Manager with investigating serious accidents and to assist teams in their work.
- Attend on representatives of regulating authorities during inspections and visits to the College.
- Assist the H&S Manager with the implementation of the Emergency Plans.
- Assist with development of Sustainability and Environmental policies that reflect current legislation and promotes best practice.
- Arrange and promulgate new safety information to all College Staff and sites.
To be successful in this role, below is what we would need from you:
- Able to get to the different campuses of the City of Portsmouth College.
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) or working towards.
- Environmental management experience.
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent IT skills and experience in Microsoft Office / 365, including word, excel, outlook, PowerPoint, teams, etc.
- Ability to communicate confidently with people at all levels.
- Initiative-taking and able to work under pressure to maintain deadlines.
- Articulate in written and oral English communication.
- Computer literate
