Position Summary

Peterborough Fire Services is seeking dedicated and community-focused individuals to join our team of skilled professionals committed to delivering exceptional fire prevention, public education, and emergency response services. As a Firefighter, you will respond to a wide range of emergency incidents, including fires, motor vehicle collisions, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue operations. Working as part of a highly trained team, you will protect life and property through fire suppression, rescue and extrication, emergency medical care, public education, and fire prevention activities.

This physically and mentally demanding role requires sound judgment, the ability to work effectively in stressful and hazardous conditions, and a strong commitment to public service. Firefighters operate and maintain specialized firefighting and rescue equipment, perform emergency response and communication duties, participate in public education initiatives, and help ensure the operational readiness of fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities. Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, adaptability, and a genuine desire to serve the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting fire suppression operations, including incident size-up, resource assessment, fire attack, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and scene security.
  • Performing search, rescue, evacuation, and victim extrication operations at fire scenes, motor vehicle collisions, and other emergencies.
  • Providing emergency medical care, including first aid, oxygen administration, CPR, defibrillation, and other designated emergency medical procedures.
  • Identifying, isolating, containing, and mitigating hazardous materials incidents.
  • Operating and maintaining firefighting apparatus, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), ladders, pumps, hoses, rescue tools, communication systems, and other emergency equipment.
  • Participating in water, ice, boat, and technical rescue operations as required.
  • Supporting emergency communications functions, including call taking and dispatch activities utilizing computer-aided dispatch systems.
  • Assisting with public education programs, fire prevention initiatives, inspections, and pre-fire planning activities.
  • Performing routine maintenance, cleaning, inventory control, and readiness checks of stations, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Preserving fire scenes, protecting evidence, and supporting investigations when required.

As a member of Peterborough Fire Services and the Peterborough Professional Fire Fighters Association, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the community through professionalism, courage, teamwork, and service excellence.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Ontario “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement: Must have attained at time of application. Must have no more than 4 demerit points in a single violation, OR no more than a total of 5 demerit points. Proof of valid driver’s license with DZ endorsement and a driver’s abstract will be required at the time of offer
  • Pleasure Craft License
  • Must have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted. (Proof of a clear criminal reference check will be required as a condition of an employment offer)
  • Valid Standard First Aid with Basic Life Support Certificate or Health Care Provider Certificate
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Speak, read, and write English proficiently and communicate clearly and precisely under demanding conditions
  • Visual requirements in accordance to NFPA 1582
  • Hearing requirements as per OFAI standards

Education

  • Certified to NFPA 1001 level I & II and NFPA 472/1072 Hazmat Operations Level or equivalent updated standard.

  • Ontario Fire Administration Inc (OFAI) Candidate Testing – Certificates for Stage One, Stage Two, Stage Three, Stage 4

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent as approved by the Ministry of Education

Hours of Work and Location

Candidates must be prepared to work 24-hour shifts including weekends and holidays.
