Purpose of Position

Operate and maintain all lift stations within the City of Oxford wastewater collection system.

The immediate supervisor for this position is the Lift Station Superintendent.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain all pump stations

Check pump stations to make sure that they are working properly

Coordinate repair efforts or make minor repairs, as necessary

Rebuild pumps and controls

Plump lift stations as required

Assist employees, as needed

Ability to troubleshoot issues and work with others to find solutions

Purchase departmental supplies

Keep inventory of supplies

Order supplies

Receive supplies

Inspect and supervise construction

Make sure work is done in accordance to City specifications

Make sure quality of material meets City specifications

Perform necessary tests on lift station and force mains before accepted by city

Perform Other Duties as Directed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:

Water mechanics and laying pipes

Pumps, compressors, and generators

Electrical control systems

Procedures for testing pump stations and force mains

EPA standards for governing waste water

Sewer control

Proper grammar and proper use of English in speaking and writing

OSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safety

Federal and state statutes concerning the work of the department

Mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication

General functions and operations of municipal government

Skills and Abilities:

Maintain accurate records

Perform routine lubrication and maintenance procedures

EPA standards and regulations governing wastewater

Ability to learn to rebuild pumps and motors

Ability to learn to rebuild electrical control systems and program computers

Work as a team member with other employees

Make decisions within specified time restraints

Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, contractors, etc., both orally and written

Maintain confidentiality

Work autonomously when necessary

Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions

Deal with others in a professional manner

Maintain professional composure in heated situations

Follow departmental and City procedures

Ability to work in confined spaces as needed


Special Requirements

The person in this position must have a valid driver’s license, and a D.E.Q. certification.
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
At least five years of experience in mechanical construction, plumbing, and electricity
Willing to take the Hepatitis A Vaccine due to exposure to human waste
Must be able to get Class B Commercial Drivers License with Tanker Endorsement
Must be able to work with others in a team environment, and to complete tasks in a timely manner

Tools and Equipment Used

Hand tools (shovels, saws, etc.)

Operate departmental equipment (i.e., backhoe, hydraulic sewer cleaner, air hammer, and dump truck)

Heavy equipment (dozer, etc.)

Physical Demands

Physical work involved with this position includes, but is not limited to, lifting, bending, climbing, and withstanding extreme temperatures.

Work Environment

The Lift Station Operator works regular hours year-round, and overtime and night work when the workload demands it. Some weekend work is also required. There is no shift work for this position. The person in this position will participate in the night/weekend call rotation and is always on call if an emergency should arise. 10% of the work for this position is indoors, and 90% is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. The position has accountability for monetary, fiscal, safety and legal issues for which this position is accountable. There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials daily. This exposure includes, but is not limited to electricity, sewer waste and solvents. The stress level associated with this position is above average.
