Grassland Conservation Officer (Operator)
Summary
An exciting opportunity to join the Grazing & Grasslands team at Epping Forest. The role involves tractor driving and machinery operation to deliver a variety of amenity, sports, conservation and access vegetation management across the Epping Forest Landscape. The position is full‑time, permanent and based at The Warren.
Key Responsibilities
- Work as part of the Grazing and Grasslands team to deliver grassland management across the ancient landscape of Epping Forest.
- Planned and carry out programmes of works, feeding monitoring outcomes that inform future management decisions.
- Operate tractors, machinery, arboriculture tools and battery‑powered equipment to manage access routes and create habitat.
- Assist with the management of the 200‑head long‑horn cattle herd and associated infrastructure.
- Ensure proper and regular maintenance, checks and safety procedures for all tractors and equipment.
- Cultivate a collaborative, pragmatic approach to meet division goals, adapting to seasonal changes that dictate priority work.
- Communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders and visitors to balance conservation requirements with public safety, access and recreation.
Candidate Profile
- Experienced tractor driver with a passion for conservation and land management.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, capable of working in a small, cross‑disciplinary team.
- Excellent attention to detail and a practical, hands‑on approach to site maintenance.
- Proficient in operating tractors, powered machinery and manual hand tools.
- Flexible and resilient, able to adjust tasks throughout the year based on seasonal priorities.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical maintenance and safety practices for field equipment.
Employment Details
- Salary: £35,310 – £39,380 per annum
- Contractual hours: 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 07:45 am – 3:45 pm with a 45‑minute lunch break)
