Environmental Health Officer

Salary: £59,060 - £66,670
Contract: Full‑time, Permanent (35 hours per week)
Work pattern: Monday to Friday, core hours 10am‑12pm and 2pm‑4pm, with a 60‑minute unpaid lunch break.

About the role
Join the Commercial Environmental Health team to develop regulatory experience in a fast‑paced, high‑profile environment. You will work with a wide range of businesses and communities, using your professional judgement to protect public health and improve the environment.
Key responsibilities
- Manage and deliver food hygiene and standards inspections as an authorised officer, applying professional judgement and building on existing knowledge and experience.
- Conduct outbreak and accident investigations, complex workplace complaints, and work with Primary Authority Partners.
- Take part in an out‑of‑hours on‑call duty rota and occasionally support defined project work or development activities at the Port Health Service or partner organisations.

- Confident across relevant areas of regulatory enforcement.

- Excellent communicator, able to negotiate and influence effectively.
- Able to work under pressure, organising and prioritising workload to meet deadlines.
- Happy to work autonomously in an agile way while contributing to a high‑performing team.
Qualifications
- BSc, MSc or apprenticeship qualification, and either registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) or completing an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) portfolio.
- Relevant competency in the delivery of official food controls as defined by the Food Law Code.
Other requirements
- Strong communication skills and the ability to prioritise and organise workload.
- Good IT skills, including confidence using the Microsoft Office suite; training will be provided on specialist systems.
- Experience of IDOX Uniform is desirable but not essential.
