The role supports the Force Vetting Unit within the Professional Standards Directorate, ensuring that systems, processes and practices comply with best practice, policy and legislation. It involves maintaining personnel security procedures, conducting confidential and rigorous vetting enquiries, and ensuring that all individuals who work with or for the Force have an acceptable level of integrity.
Responsibilities
- Interrogate and research the Police National Computer, Force Crime Reporting and Information database, Force Intelligence Systems, the Complaints System and other related computer systems, including financial systems belonging to credit agencies, for the purpose of the confidential vetting of personnel.
- Use own judgement to identify other sources of information for the purpose of validating supplied information and decide whether further investigation is required.
- Identify detailed information that contributes to the security assessment of an applicant’s suitability to access City of London Police premises, assets, equipment or information without unacceptable risk.
- Liaise and make enquiries with other forces, agencies and HM Government departments to gather information and supporting material on an individual.
- Contribute to the decision‑making process by accurately and comprehensively recording and reporting information to identify and concisely evidence any perceived vulnerability.
- Inform the Vetting Manager, in confidence, of any identified or potential welfare issues arising during the vetting process.
Requirements
- Understanding of security vetting and the threats to City of London Police security and integrity.
- Previous experience working within a vetting environment, completing risk assessments and analysing multiple sources of information.
- Proven excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including:
- Ability to deal confidently and effectively with people at all levels across the social spectrum and from all backgrounds.
- Establishing a high degree of trust, rapport and cooperation with individuals.
- Demonstrating a high level of tact, sensitivity and maturity in outlook.
- Confident and articulate communication in all formats (face‑to‑face, telephone, written).
- Addressing groups and individuals, delivering messages and answering questions concisely with sound factual reasoning.
- Acting on facts and remaining objective, unprejudiced and impartial in interacting with others while forming dispassionate interpretations, with regard to the law, relevant guidelines and best practice.
