Applications are invited only from Home Office Forces or British Transport Police. Applicants must have successfully completed their work-based assessment and currently serve as a substantive Sergeant, within their force, to join the City of London Police on level transfer. This opportunity is open to re-joiners who left their previous force as a Substantive Sergeant. This opportunity is not open to Constables on temporary Sergeant promotion, currently undertaking a work-based assessment.
Directorate/Department: Various specialist roles which we are not able to fill via our internal promotion process, for Uniform Sergeants this will include Custody (within the Specialist Operations directorate) and other roles within our Local Policing and National Lead Force directorates.
All those applying for this process and particularly those who are uniformed specialists should, if successful, expect to be posted to force priority areas including custody, which requires substantive sergeants to function. If not posted to custody initially, a number of other successful candidates will be custody trained and will be expected to provide cover for abstractions.
Statement of expectation for the role: There is an expectation that successful candidates will complete a minimum of two years in their initial posting.
Vetting level required: The vetting level for these roles varies.

There are a number of exciting uniform roles within the City of London Police, however all have one aim which is to minimize risk to the public, business community and the force, by ensuring the right resources are available to respond appropriately and effectively to any situation. You will work with your senior management team colleagues to enhance the professional development & performance of the force and ensure it achieves its vision and delivers its policing priorities.
As a Sergeant you will carry an important role in ensuring effective daily supervision, guidance and support of officers and staff. You will be responsible for enabling the development of competence within your team whilst ensuring that organizational standards are met, and objectives achieved.
This role will co-ordinate, monitor and respond where necessary, to front line policing activity to uphold the law, enable public safety and build public confidence in policing in line with legal frameworks and policy guidelines. Together with excellent leadership skills, an ability to build public confidence and a focus on partnership policing, you will also be able to demonstrate forward thinking in order to identify the best way to deliver services. It is anticipated that all successful applicants will undertake a custody rotation within their posting.
Our Local Policing directorate is home to the force’s Response and Neighbourhood Policing teams and other uniformed specialist units including Roads Policing, Project Servator, Firearms, Public Order and the Force Control Room. We provide the first response to the public, specialist policing services and delivery of local Neighbourhood Policing services to our resident, business and transient City of London communities.
Our Specialist Operations directorate is home to the force’s Investigation and Intelligence teams and other specialist units including, Public Protection Custody, Criminal Justice, Covert & CT Policing, Forensics and Cyber Protect teams. We deliver the very highest of investigation standards alongside excellent support through our enabling services – together this ensures we provide a first-class response to victims and secure the very best outcomes to keep those that work, live and visit the city safe and feeling safe.
Additionally, we have national roles in relation to fraud, cyber and economic crime. We lead and support the National Fraud, Economic Crime and Cyber Crime Strategy. We co-ordinate national pursue and protect campaigns against high harm threats and encourage greater prioritisation of fraud across policing.
The Selection/promotion Process Comprises Of The Following:
- A competency-based online application form: The application form will ask the candidates to provide examples (within the last three years) against the following competencies: we take ownership, we support and inspire and we analyse critically. There will also be a question on why me why now? which will be scored against the value of Public Service.
- Shortlisting panel: the panel will assess your application against the Competency Value Framework (CVF).
- Boards: Interviews are scheduled for w/c 8th September – 3rd October. Candidates who are successful at shortlisting stage will be invited to attend an interview which will assess the following:
- Professional Conversation: the assessment and delivery of a briefing to the panel will assess the candidates’ ability to deal with operational issues at Sergeant level. The professional conversation assessment will test: we analyse critically, we take ownership and we are emotionally aware.
- Competency based interview: the interview will test: we are innovative and open minded, we are collaborative, we support and inspire and the value of respect and empathy. At least one question will be forward facing.
