The City of London Police is seeking a motivated and committed individual to join the Public Protection Unit (PPU) on a 6-month attachment basis. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist investigative environment, supporting the force's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable people and bringing offenders to justice. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience investigating complex public protection matters while working alongside experienced detectives, safeguarding professionals and partner agencies. The Public Protection Unit is responsible for investigating offences and managing risk relating to:

  • Domestic abuse
  • Child abuse and child protection
  • Sexual offences
  • Vulnerable adults
  • Multi-agency safeguarding arrangements
  • Offender management and risk assessment

The unit works closely with statutory and voluntary sector partners to safeguard vulnerable individuals, reduce harm and effectively manage offenders.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Investigate public protection-related offences in accordance with legislation, policy and best practice.
  • Conduct victim-focused investigations with safeguarding at the centre of decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and external partner agencies.
  • Complete risk assessments and safeguarding referrals.
  • Gather, review and present evidence to support criminal investigations.
  • Maintain accurate records and case files.
  • Attend strategy meetings, case conferences and safeguarding panels as required.
  • Support the force's commitment to protecting vulnerable people and reducing harm.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Strong investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to manage sensitive and complex information.
  • Sound decision-making and risk assessment skills.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable individuals or managing safeguarding concerns.
  • A commitment to victim care and safeguarding principles.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.

Desirable

  • Previous experience within a Public Protection Unit, Safeguarding Team, CID or similar investigative environment.
  • PIP accreditation, or an aspiration to undertake the NIE and work towards PIP accreditation in the future.
  • Knowledge of relevant safeguarding and public protection legislation and frameworks.
  • Experience of multi-agency partnership working.

The application and interview process will be tested under the Level 1 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework (CVF). Applicants who fail to address the skills, knowledge and experience required for the role may not be considered.
