The Service Improvement Inspector’s work is overseen by the Service Improvement Superintendent and supported by the Service Improvement Manager and continuous improvement officers. The role focuses on researching, monitoring, reviewing and implementing improvements in response to areas for improvement identified by HMICFRS, and broader internal and external learning and evidence of ‘what works’. Service Improvement Inspectors lead the ‘Reality testing’ and ‘Readiness Assessment’ process to provide an authentic, objective picture of a particular area and make practical recommendations for improvement.
Responsibilities
- Produce high‑quality reports and papers using MS Office and present findings to the Service Improvement Board.
- Conduct reality testing and readiness assessments across the force estate, including regular travel.
- Provide impartial evidence‑based insights on crime/disorder, community safety and policing priorities.
- Improve understanding of HMICFRS’s purpose and plans and assist directorates with business responses.
- Support the Service Improvement Manager with horizon scanning, inspection planning and evidence‑gathering logistics.
- Collaborate with other organisations and academic bodies to capture evidence‑based practice and integrate it into service improvement activity.
