Description Of Department: The Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) is part of the City of London Police's National Lead Force for fraud and has been established for over 13 years providing a dedicated resource to combat insurance fraud throughout England and Wales. As a dedicated unit, we receive funding from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to undertake our work but are fully operationally independent to make our own investigative decisions. Some examples of the types of work we deal with include:
- Organised crime groups inducing collisions to defraud insurers.
- Fraudulent life insurance claims resulting in several hundreds of thousands of pounds of loss.
- Induced arson to commit insurance fraud resulting in a risk to the public and substantial losses to the insurance industry.
Responsibilities: We are now seeking a dedicated Detective Sergeant to lead our referrals team which supports our operational colleagues and provides real value to a range of stakeholders. This role will see the successful candidate leading a small, multi-disciplined team of dedicated staff and officers who work collectively to combat insurance fraud, as well as often being the first port of call for our insurance industry colleagues to access our services. This diverse role will predominantly see the successful candidate responsible for delivering the following functions:
- Ensuring an effective referrals process, meeting Service Level Agreements and ensuring our operational teams receive investigations in a timely fashion.
- Leading a small team of DCs who proactively seek to disrupt online insurance fraud through a range of innovative tactics.
- Supporting and developing our research and analyst colleagues to provide meaningful insights to ensure we remain effective.
This is truly an exciting time to join the referrals team as we transform our processes to free up time to focus on investigations and providing meaningful impacts to our victims, stakeholders and wider society. This role is predominantly office hours, with the occasional requirement to change shifts to provide resourcing to night turn DS roles and other operational deployments such as the Lady / Lord Mayors Show. There is the occasional requirement to travel (UK based), to meet with stakeholders.
Essential Qualifications: PIP Level 2 qualified Detective Sergeant. MV/SC vetting, or willing to achieve this.
Key Responsibilities / Essential Skills:
- Effective decision-making skills in terms of identifying cases suitable for investigation as well as ability to assess and triage intelligence using models such as THRIVE+.
- Ability to build effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, acting as the gatekeeper for IFED's services.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain decisions clearly and effectively to a range of interested parties.
- Proficiency in a range of Microsoft 365 solutions such as Excel and MS Lists, as well as police crime recording solutions such as Niche and APMIS.
- An innovative mindset where we constantly seek to improve the way we operate.
- Experience of criminal investigations with an evidenced ability to identify risk and cases likely to be suitable for investigation.
Desirable Criteria: Knowledge and understanding of the Fraud Investigation Model (FIM). A working knowledge of financial investigations. A full UK driving licence and City of London Police basic permit (or willingness to obtain if external candidate).
