Statement of expectation for the role: This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with the Local Policing Senior Management Team, providing high-level support to the leadership of one of the Force's most visible and operationally focused directorates. The successful applicant will act as a key link between the SMT, internal departments, and external stakeholders, helping to coordinate priorities, manage strategic and operational activity, and ensure effective governance across Local Policing. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate exceptional organisational skills, sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to manage competing demands. They will play an important role in supporting decision making, tracking performance and delivery, preparing briefings and correspondence, coordinating meetings, and ensuring actions are progressed to completion. Description of Department: Local Policing is at the heart of the City of London Police's delivery of visible policing, neighbourhood engagement, emergency response, safeguarding, public protection, crime investigation, and problem solving. The Directorate works closely with communities, businesses, partners, and other law enforcement agencies to keep the City safe and maintain public confidence. The Local Policing Senior Management Team provides strategic direction, leadership, and oversight for the Directorate, ensuring that operational performance, workforce wellbeing, partnership engagement, and organisational objectives are effectively delivered. The Staff Officer role sits at the centre of this activity, providing direct support to senior leaders and enabling the efficient operation of the Directorate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct staff officer support to the Local Policing SMT.
- Coordinate and manage SMT business, priorities, actions, and commitments.
- Produce high-quality briefings, reports, presentations, and correspondence.
- Prepare materials for governance boards, meetings, inspections, and external engagements.
- Monitor and track actions, risks, decisions, and performance measures.
- Support the development and implementation of strategic and operational initiatives.
- Liaise with stakeholders across the Force and with external partners on behalf of the SMT.
- Assist with planning and coordination of major events, visits, and operational activity.
- Conduct research and analysis to support informed decision making.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and support effective business management across the Directorate.

This is an operational position within Local Policing, and the successful applicant must be able to deploy in uniform when required. The post holder may be required to support operational incidents, events, abstractions, and other operational policing commitments. Applicants should ensure they can maintain the operational standards and training required for deployment.
