Lead for Welfare Support Officers (WSO)
An opportunity is available for a Chief Inspector or a current T/Chief Inspector, to undertake the additional role of Force Lead for Welfare Support Officers (WSO).
This voluntary role will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the WSO programme, ensuring it continues to deliver meaningful support to officers and staff across the force. The successful applicant will lead the ongoing development of the WSO network, promoting a consistent and effective approach that aligns with force wellbeing priorities and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy.
The role will involve working closely with a range of stakeholders, including Staff Support Networks, the Police Federation, Staff Associations, Trade Unions, Professional Standards Department (PSD), Occupational Health and Wellbeing colleagues. The postholder will be responsible for strengthening relationships across these groups to ensure the WSO programme remains accessible, trusted and responsive to workforce needs.
The successful applicant will:
- Lead the development and implementation of the force's Welfare Support Officer programme.
- Establish governance, processes and standards to support a consistent and effective approach across the organisation.
- Work in partnership with Staff Support Networks, the Police Federation, Staff Associations and recognised Trade Unions to ensure the programme reflects the needs of the workforce.
- Develop training, guidance and continuous professional development opportunities for Welfare Support Officers.
- Identify and embed best practice from across policing and other sectors.
- Build strong working relationships with the Professional Standards Department (PSD), Occupational Health, Wellbeing and People Services teams to ensure appropriate support pathways and governance are in place.
- Promote the role and value of Welfare Support Officers across the force.
- Ensure the programme is delivered in accordance with the force EDI Strategy, supporting an inclusive and supportive workplace for all.
This role will be undertaken in addition to the successful applicant's substantive position and therefore applicants must have the support of their line manager.
