The Program Coordinator works with the Manager, Heritage Programming to develop, implement and promote a range of programs, workshops and events that support public engagement and education.

This includes working in conjunction with the various sites managed by the Heritage Services department—including the Mac Lachlan Woodworking Museum, Pump House Museum and Kingston City Hall—and out in the community in collaboration with internal and external partners as required.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for delivering a variety of engagement and education opportunities that require working with staff, students, volunteers, subject specialists and community partners to deliver consistent, quality programming and lead community engagements that are informed by a combination of expertise and experience related to specialized fields like museums, galleries, historic sites, cultural and arts centers.

The Program Coordinator should also possess excellent people skills, experience in public engagement and community development, knowledge of the Ontario curriculum and be an advocate for public education and community engagement.

We celebrate and protect Kingston’s rich cultural history through engaging programs, museum experiences, and guided tours.

Our team also preserves the city’s built heritage and archaeological resources by managing heritage permits, designations, and assessments, ensuring thoughtful development and lasting preservation.

  • What you’ll do
  • Community engagement and development support through heritage programming and in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Program development, implementation and promotion to support the Mac Lachlan Woodworking Museum, the Pump House Museum and Kingston City Hall National Historic Site.
  • Liaise with colleagues, summer students, schools, educators, artists and the community to co‑coordinate activities and resources to ensure the expected outcomes are met for program delivery.
  • Plan and monitor assigned budgets for programming that includes expenses for artist fees, program supplies, and other related expenses.
  • Document and evaluate programs and outreach using established evaluation methodologies and complete reports as required.
  • Deliver educational tours, guided tours, demonstrations, workshops and public programming and assist with special events and exhibits.
  • Work with student staff and volunteers and provide guidance to ensure consistent, quality program delivery.
  • Other duties as assigned, including providing support for daily operations at the two City‑owned museums and City Hall National Historic Site as needed.

Qualifications

  • 3 year degree in education, history, museum studies or related field.
  • Two (2) years of progressive experience in delivering cultural and/or educational programming and community cultural engagement in schools and/or community settings.
  • Heritage, museum, customer service and audience development experience an asset.
  • Cultural development and community engagement experience an asset.
  • Experience working with student staff and volunteers is considered an asset.

  • Ability to work independently and in a dynamic, team oriented environment.
  • Excellent people skills and well developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Creativity, enthusiasm and attention to detail.

  • Strong problem solving, research and evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario curriculum as well as current programs and policies in community cultural development, community arts and youth engagement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work with diverse populations, including ethno-cultural and Indigenous communities as well as underserved communities.
  • French or other languages considered an asset.
  • Must have own transportation and a valid “G” class driver’s licence.
  • Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check, including vulnerable sector.
