Position Summary

Please note: This is a temporary position covering full-time hours for a level 3 310T apprentice up to 24 months. This position receives 4% in lieu of vacation + 13% in lieu of all benefits in addition to hourly rate of pay.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Fleet Services the apprentice mechanic will evaluate, diagnose and perform maintenance and repairs on a diverse municipal fleet of vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret owner/operator/manufacturer operating manuals and service specifications.
  • Diagnose and isolate faults using various diagnostics equipment.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot and repair: electrical and electronic systems, engines including fuel, exhaust, intake and emission controls; transmissions, clutches, drive shafts and axles; body and trim, frames; steering, suspension and computer control systems; tires, wheels and hubs; braking systems including air supply and hydraulic, heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Review and document repairs and inventory into computerized work order system.
  • Adhere to safe working practices at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Competencies

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent education.
  • Must have a minimum of 1-year practical experience working in a repair and maintenance garage with supporting references. Preference will be given to a level 3 310T apprentice.
  • Demonstrated experience using a computerized work order system.
  • Must meet and maintain the eligibility requirements of membership in the Ontario College of Trades and Apprentices.
  • Capable of operating municipal and construction equipment for testing purposes.
  • Possess a valid class G driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract. DZ license preferred.
  • Possess a Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service certification is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate corporate values of Belonging, Collaboration, Accountability, and Innovation.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the job including, lifting up to 75 lbs, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing a ladder and able to withstand long periods of standing, bending, twisting and reaching above head level.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical diagrams, schematics and technical manuals.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to learn and use the Fleet Management Information System.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal direction in a busy repair and maintenance environment.
  • Able to learn to use, operate and maintain tools and automotive diagnostic and test equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating shift work including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to work out of various locations within the City.

Conditions of employment are:

  • A training agreement must be completed and signed by the College of Trades.
  • Completion of the on-the-job training set out in the Apprenticeship Training Standard Logbook established by the College.
  • Successful completion of all required practical training and in school within five years of date of hire.
  • Obtain the certificate of qualification (310T License) within 6 months of completing all in school and practical training.
  • Obtain the certificate of qualification (310S License) within 2 years of 310T certification.
