Under general supervision, controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, and maintains all fire equipment. Receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls, performing the necessary functions and operations to efficiently handle any fireground situation. Performs fire inspections and pre‑fire planning. Minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and other related tasks as assigned. Reports to the Fire Rescue Captain and/or Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director within the established chain of command. Works a 40‑hour schedule, daytime, weekdays initially, with changes to a 24‑hour shift schedule moving forward to include 7‑day coverage for the county.
Examples of Duties:
- Receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls, performing the necessary functions and operations to efficiently handle any fireground situation.
- Performs fire inspections and pre‑fire planning.
- Minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and other related tasks.
- Reports to the Lancaster County Fire Service Director through the established chain of command.
Typical Qualifications:
- High School graduate with successful completion of firefighter training courses equivalent to South Carolina Fire Academy courses 1152, 2722, NFPA Firefighter I and II, Lancaster County Blood Born Pathogen, and first aid with Medical first responder required in first year.
- Hazmat Technician will be required in the first year of employment along with pump operations.
- Must possess a minimum class E South Carolina Driver’s License or CDL with tanker endorsement.
- At least two years experience in active fire service participation preferred.
- Combinations of education, training and service along with volunteer service will be taken into consideration.
