We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as a Waste Collection Labourer. The Waste Collection Labourer position offers the successful candidate variety in their work day. On most days you will be teamed up with another collector helping them collect waste from communal bins by assisting vehicle backing, swamping, and recording the work done.
What will you be doing?
- Provide guidance to the driver in backing up situations
- Load and clean excess materials in and around waste/recycling bins/carts
- Move and/or position empty waste/recycling bins/carts back to their original or designated locations at Communal sites
- Perform manual swamper duties (including heavy lifting/pushing) associated with maneuvering full waste/recycling/food scraps bins and carts to staging locations for collection
- Adhere to all policies and procedures during the collection process including safety and environmental regulations and procedures
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude in the performance of all duties
- Respond to questions and/or complaints from the public concerning waste collection programs
- Perform other and related duties as required
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle including cleaning hoppers/traps daily
- Operation of Rearload collection vehicle controls
- Passenger for extended periods in all weather conditions
- Physically strenuous labor is required when maneuvering bins/carts to Collection areas and returning them to their original locations
- Working outside in 4 season weather conditions
Qualifications
- Completed Grade 12 and supplemented by some truck driving experience or equivalent combination of training and experience
Assets
- Valid Alberta Class 3 licence is an asset
- Current Standard First Aid certification is an asset
- Experience in the Waste Collection industry is an asset
Skills Required for Success
- Ability to perform heavy, strenuous and agility intensive labour for extended periods of time and under extreme weather conditions
- Knowledge and application of correct weight lifting and handling techniques in order to minimize strain and lifting injury
- Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping, and associated mishaps
- Ability to deal with the public during pickup of refuse and to resolve complaints of a minor nature
- Ability to work alone with little or no supervision, as well as the ability to work with a small team

Conditions of Employment
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position.
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Passing a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test F.A.R.E.) and a pre-employment City medical examination is a requirement of this position
Hours of Work: Various shifts, 40 hours per week. Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods.
