As a park ranger, you will contribute to the maintenance, development, and improvement of parks and open space areas working in partnership with local communities, and other internal and external partners and services. You will work in urban/city parks and open spaces carrying out a wide range of tasks and activities including planting projects, infrastructure inspections, working with friends of parks groups, dealing with the public, carrying out repairs and other improvements, resolving anti-social behaviour, and much more.

Among other related duties, you will carry out the following:

  • Act as first point of contact to advise on management rules and local park developments.
  • Engage and interact with users and encourage respect and protection of urban city parks and open space environments.
  • Patrol city parks and open spaces, enforcing local regulations, dealing with anti-social behaviour, supporting environmental programmes, performing a range of site maintenance and repairs, managing volunteers and friends groups, and responding to queries, concerns, and emergencies to ensure a safe environment for the public.
  • Undertake designated patrol and security duties, complete documentation and log information.
  • Identify and respond immediately to problems encountered during visits or at the request of service supervisors or park users.

Working in city parks and open spaces can be challenging and demanding as the focus is more on visitor safety and site management. You will need excellent communication and problem-solving skills to resolve enquiries and expect to have daily engagement with the public. You may work alone or as part of a small team.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care-experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.

As part of our goal to improve organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure we're recruiting the best people. We're interested not only in your skills and experience but also in your approach to work. Therefore, part of our interview process will be an assessment of how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range. Happy to talk flexible working.
