Rowanfield Special School is a fixed-term position until 02/04/2027, with a salary of £71,649 for 35 hours per week. Opened in 2002, the school is located in the north of Edinburgh and is part of the Craigroyston High School cluster. It caters to children aged 5-12 years with a wide range of additional support needs.

The school is divided into three learning and teaching pods, each consisting of three classrooms, a base room, and a general-purpose area. Shared facilities include a gym hall, art room, teacher resource room, family room, nurture classroom (The Zone), Relax Kids room with a sensory room, visiting therapists' room, and a Soft Play area.

There are 11 teaching staff, including the Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, and 2 Principal Teachers, supported by 15-17 support staff, including Pupil Support Officers, Early Years Practitioners, Pupil Support Workers, Administrators, and a Business Manager. This staffing model reflects the individual care and attention required by the young people.

The school employs a multi-agency approach, collaborating with Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, School Doctors, Nurses, Health Assistants, and Community Mental Health Workers. Partnerships also exist with Edinburgh Together, Social Work, and other family support agencies.

Class organisation includes:

  • Willow Team - Primary P2-P5, 3 classes, max 6 pupils per class, staffed by 3 Class Teachers and 7 support staff.
  • Hawthorn Team - Primary 5-7, 3 classes, max 6 pupils per class, staffed by 3 Class Teachers and 6 support staff.
  • Sycamore Team - Complex and profound needs, largely associated with ASD, with 1 Principal Teacher, 2 Class Teachers, and approximately 9 support staff.

Children are grouped into classes based on their needs, maintaining age ranges as much as possible. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of the curriculum, be an excellent practitioner, possess experience with a range of needs, understand the influence of adult behaviour in a school, and have a proven track record in building relationships and creating a safe learning environment that promotes attainment.

The depute post includes two days of class teaching, and an interest and experience in Outdoor Learning is preferable. This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will need to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. An Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required for individuals who have spent a continuous period of 3 months or more outside the UK in the last 5 years.

An unconditional offer of employment will be subject to satisfactory outcomes from these pre-employment checks. Salaries will align with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.
