The Assistant Attorney II is a professional position that answers to the Director, Division Chief or any Senior Attorney, depending on the assignment and provides a variety of legal services, which may be civil, traffic, administrative, or criminal law related. The incumbent assists the Director of Law in providing legal counsel and representation to the City and its various departments, agencies, boards, officials and employees. The Assistant Attorney II provides legal research, as well as renders both oral and written legal opinions. May be required to provide representation at administrative tribunals, and before municipal and state common pleas and appeal courts, including both jury and non‑jury matters. Handles plea negotiations and settlements of civil cases, controversies and claims. The Assistant Attorney II is responsible for drafting memorandum, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, legislation proposals, leases, deeds, purchase agreements and administrative regulations and policies on behalf of the City. Incumbent is expected to stay informed of municipal, criminal, and any related fields of law and fulfill all Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • L.L.B. or J.D. from an accredited law school in good standing with the Ohio Bar Association and 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or Public Administration may be substituted for one year of the above required experience. Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check

A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job‑related medical examination including drug screen.
