The building will serve as a hub for the new Campus – providing spaces for teaching and learning, study, research, meeting, civic activities, events and more, as well as providing a new base for a number of academic schools and centres.

This Estates Assistant position is an active operational and front line role, working across the building and wider campus. You’ll be carrying out a range of operational duties, such as safety and compliance checks, furniture moves, sorting and distributing mail and deliveries, maintaining building presentation, and assisting building users with wayfinding and fault reporting. Often as the first point of contact for students, staff, visitors, partners, and members of the public, you’ll always remain focused on providing excellent customer service and will play a pivotal role in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and professional environment. You’ll be part of a newly formed Service Delivery team which will be critical in making sure the building runs smoothly and all users of the building have a high quality and positive experience.

What will you be doing?

  • Providing a friendly, efficient, welcoming and inclusive service to staff, students, contractors and members of the public at all times including assisting with wayfinding, handling lost property, accepting and reporting faults and issues, taking a proactive approach to solve any issues and reporting and following up when needed.
  • Supporting building operations by monitoring and carrying out safety and compliance tests i.e. fire alarm testing, assisting with emergency evacuations, cleanliness checks, monitoring and reporting equipment and maintenance faults. You will accurately record these results digitally and on paper to demonstrate compliance.
  • Supporting loading bay operations. Assisting with delivery handling as well as internal and external mail, ensuring accurate distribution to building users.
  • Ensuring all internal and external areas are maintained to a high standard of presentation at all times, disposing of bagged waste, arranging special waste collections, litter picking, jet washing external areas, responding to emergency spills.
  • Assisting in room preparation including moving furniture to set out rooms according to requirements for teaching, exams meetings and conferences.
  • Working safely at all times, following University and departmental guidelines and undertaking staff training as required.
  • Prioritising workload to ensure tasks are completed timely, using low-activity periods for cleaning, compliance testing tasks and area security.
  • Undertaking specified roles during emergencies and building evacuations, including evacuating building users, staffing doors, fire search duties and liaising with emergency services.
  • Verifying visitor and contractor signing in, directing, issuing keys and access passes.
  • Supporting major University events such as Welcome Week, Open Days and conferences.

You should apply if:

  • You have experience of providing a high standard of customer service in a front line role.
  • You have excellent attention to detail, take pride in your work and complete tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • You enjoy working with people, both as customers and as part of a team.
  • You’re a natural problem solver who can use initiative and good judgement to handle non‑routine tasks and unexpected challenges.
  • You thrive in a busy, fast paced environment and can stay calm and positive when juggling multiple tasks.
  • You can exercise empathy and sensitivity when required and have previous experience of doing so, sometimes in challenging situations.
  • You’d enjoy the challenge of working in a new building, campus and team and contributing to shaping the operation and continuous improvements.
