The role of Environmental Operative (Waste and Resources) works at the front line of waste management operations at the University. Working alongside a second Environmental Operative as part of the Circular Economy team, the role involves undertaking collections of waste for re-use and recycling from sites across all campuses, working to ensure the efficient operation of our Re-Store re-use facility and supporting continuous improvement in waste management procedures at the University. The role is part of the Sustainability team so there will also be opportunities to contribute to delivery of the University’s wider environmental goals. In this team, you’ll be at the heart of our drive to create a sustainable University and our goal of a net zero carbon campus.
What will you be doing? Based at Campus Division, you will work in different locations across our estate including our North Somerset Campus and satellite sites, carrying out waste collections (including hazardous waste); organise surplus furniture and other equipment for reuse within the University or for recycling by one of our waste contractors; monitoring waste facilities to identify and help resolve any issues affecting efficiency or compliance; and working with the team to maintain and develop waste management procedures and to encourage more sustainable use of resources across the University. You will be in daily contact with other University staff, responding to queries and requests for waste collections, and will liaise with external waste contractors as required to help maintain high standards of customer service and environmental management.
You should apply if you have practical experience in waste management or a similar environmental/operational role and are committed to ensuring high standards of environmental management and are passionate as well as committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for our staff and students at the University. You will be a confident IT user with excellent communication and customer service skills whilst being capable of managing your own time effectively to complete both scheduled jobs and ad-hoc work. You will be adaptable, comfortable with working outdoors and to a flexible pattern when required, e.g. on occasional weekends for university open days and must hold a full UK Driving Licence.
Additional information: Work pattern: Full time - 35 hours. Grade: E. School/Unit: Campus Division.
