0.6 Communication Support Worker/BSL Interpreter

Location: Covent Garden, London (hybrid or remote working may be possible)

Salary: £19,371 - £23,154.60 per annum (£32,285 - £38,591 full time equivalent), dependent on experience and level of qualification (TLSI/RLSI)

Hours of Work: 21 hours per week across 3 days, including some occasional evening and weekend work.

Then join the Access, Inclusion and Support department at our ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rated College to provide in-class communication support both on-site and online, to deaf and hard of hearing students, and interpreting support as required to deaf staff within City Lit.

In this role, you will use communication strategies to match the access needs of a range of deaf students, including those with complex needs and low-level language. The majority of students will be on mainstream courses and will be studying at a variety of levels across a range of courses of variable duration. The postholder will also undertake BSL/English/SSE interpreting assignments and assist the deaf Support Coordinator with some student advice, administrative duties and record keeping as required.

The ideal candidate will have:

• (NRCPD-regulated) Trainee Interpreter (TSLI) qualification, along with a BSL level 6 qualification or equivalent, or (NRCPD-regulated) Registered (qualified) Interpreter (RSLI).
• Experience of working with deaf students.
• Knowledge of issues related to education and deaf people and the ability to explain and promote understanding of these issues to teaching staff and other students.
• Proficient in providing communication access via Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
• Experience of effectively interpreting between British Sign Language (BSL) and English, and to be confident in the use of SSE as an alternative to BSL.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply the NRCPD Code of Ethics for Sign Language Interpreters.
