Maintenance Craftsperson (Joinery)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a successful candidate to join CHoICE in the position of Maintenance Craftsperson (Joiner). Providing services on behalf of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, CHoICE is an independent wholly owned subsidiary company which provides all hard and soft facility services at Sunderland Royal Hospital and associated sites.
The successful applicant will join a team of existing Building Maintenance staff directly employed to form part of the Estates Hard FM services within CHoICE. The Team provides planned/reactive building maintenance activities, an emergency on call service covering 365 days per annum as well as undertaking minor building related installations and building related minor works services.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant must have a detailed understanding of construction processes in relation to joinery and other related building works in accordance with relevant statutory and mandatory legislation and best practice guidance. He/she must also be able to provide evidence of the completion/obtainment of recognised relevant joinery apprenticeship and ideally will have gained maintenance experience within a healthcare environment or similar although this is not essential.
You will be expected to receive identified workloads on a handheld device from the Estates and Facilities Help Desk and be expected to organise and prioritise these daily activities to ensure the tasks are completed in the most efficient and effective manner. Support and guidance will be provided where necessary to ensure CHoICE can fulfil its statutory and mandatory obligations.
The role will also require the individual to have a flexible and positive approach to all activities and have the ability to deal with new scenarios as they arise. The role will furthermore require excellent communication skills and will require liaison directly with clinical and non-clinical staff and service users.

Job responsibilities
To undertake maintenance and installation work/activities appropriate to the core specialist skills across the whole range of building related services. The post holder will also be required to participate in the current CFS shift pattern/system, current on-call rota and undertake overtime when the service needs dictate for which appropriate payments will be made.

Experience
- Knowledge and experience of engineering and building systems typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust
- Detailed knowledge and experience of joinery related & building requirements and regulations typically found within large NHS Acute Trust acquired through qualifications and relevant experience
- Previous experience of working within a similar maintenance environment
Qualifications
- Basic numeracy & literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent
- Basic IT Skills
- BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 in relevant building discipline
- Completion of recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant building discipline
- Advanced craft certificate or NVQ level 4
- Relevant qualification in the maintenance of fire doors
Physical Skills
- Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the post, including travel to all sites, on-call and call out requirements.
- Willing and able to use CHoICE vehicles and be able to travel to CHoICE managed sites.
- Is able to have the ability to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods throughout a typical working day
- Is able to complete tasks which require short intensive bursts of effort before returning to moderate physical
- Undertake regular moving and handling activities
- Requirement for highly developed physical dexterity, for hand and eye coordination and manipulation of fine tools
Skills and Knowledge
- Able to use his/her own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for a satisfactory completion.
- To have the ability to adapt to the changing demands of the role including the reaction to emergency situations
- Able to prioritise his/her own workload ensuring that high quality patient care and SLA targets are achieved.
- Regularly provide and receive routine information and on occasion complex or sensitive information with a range of Estates work colleagues, other Trust colleagues and external Trust/CFS contacts
