Overview

City Hospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises Ltd (CHoICE) Facilities Services are seeking a passionate, hardworking and reliable individual to join our team and fulfil the role of Domestic Assistant. The closing date is 12 February 2026.

CHoICEFacilities Services provide a wide range of services including Domestic Services based over South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust sites. Main duties of the job

To carry out all cleaning assigned, making full use of guidance and training given, using checklists provided.

Provide a beverage service to patients and visitors as required.

Ensure all necessary equipment/machinery is fit for purpose before use and ensure it is cleaned and correctly stored after use.

Use all materials and consumables in accordance with laid down practices.

Collection, segregation and disposal of waste materials, replacement of liners, in accordance with policies.

Packing, sorting, delivering and collection of linen.

Undertake manual and mechanical cleaning activities in accordance with the cleaning schedule.

Ensure that all cleaning schedules are completed and checked on a daily basis.

Refilling of all dispensers including soap, hand towels, toilet rolls and all paper rolls.

Provide emergency and ad hoc cleaning as required.

Cleaning in close proximity to patients including beds, windows, curtain rails, window ledges, tables and lockers.

Work safely at all times giving due consideration to themselves and others.

Use the appropriate work equipment and PPE provided, reporting any maintenance, safety deficiencies and incidents to a member of the supervisory team.

Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by management.

Maintaining cleanliness of entrances, work areas and grounds as necessary.

Shifts: Mon-Fri 0600-1000; Mon-Fri 1600-2000. Assessment day to be held on 25th March.

Job responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining an acceptable standard of cleanliness in the allocated areas using the correct cleaning methods, frequencies, materials and equipment, cleaning to the National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2021. Cleaning is carried out in wards and departments throughout the organisation.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Basic Numeracy and Literacy education
  • Cleaning experience
  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate

Experience

  • Good understanding of cleaning services
  • Cleaning experience
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to accept and prioritise instructions
  • Previous experience working with cleaning machinery

Physical skills

  • Combination of bending/lifting/standing and walking with frequent requirement for physical effort
  • Able to undertake varied manual handling tasks including use of machinery, movement of beds and other equipment
  • Ability to work in busy environment
