Would you like to be involved with supporting the delivery of T Levels in Agriculture, Environmental and Animal Care? We are looking for Marking Team Leads to join us in the delivery of the Summer 2026 exam series for core exam Common Paper 1. This role gives you the opportunity to work with City & Guilds alongside your current job, to build additional income with competitive daily rates, and contribute to expanding your skills and development.

Current Marking Examiners and Team Leads that take on this role alongside their work in a centre have said that being a Marking Examiner and/or Team Lead helps them better understand how to prepare and support their own candidates. Common Paper 1 is one of the exam papers that assess the common core content. It is a two‑hour exam with a maximum of 80 marks available. This paper is a great introduction to marking and team leading for those that have not done these roles previously. The common core covers the building blocks of knowledge and skills that give learners a broad understanding of the industry and job roles across all pathways in Agriculture, Land Management and Production (ALMP) and Animal Care and Management (ACM). At the same time, it develops the core skills they will need to apply when working within industry.

This exam is common to all core pathways:

  • Agriculture, Land Management and Production (ALMP)
  • Crop, Horticulture, and Trees
  • Livestock
  • Land‑based Engineering
  • Floristry core
  • Animal Care and Management (ACM)
  • Animal Management
  • Animal Science

Overview Of Topic Areas Covered By Common Paper 1:

  • Health and safety
  • Sustainability
  • Working in the agriculture, environmental and animal care sector
  • Ethics
  • Business
  • Equality
  • Communication
  • Relationship management
  • Finance
  • Information and data.

Further detail on these elements, including sample assessments, can be found in the qualification specification on the 8717 qualification webpage. The Role Profile outlines the expectations of the Marking Team Lead role, and the Person Specification outlines the experience we’re looking for someone to have as a marking team lead.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend, participate and engage in and support standardisation activities.
  • Act as a marker for the assessment for your own small allocation.
  • Sample and monitor the work of markers throughout the marking period to ensure consistency of marking.

  • Alert Principal Examiner and City & Guilds contacts to under performance of individual markers.
  • Collate examiner reports and submit within the specified time.
  • Provide online and/or telephone first line support to markers, where appropriate. This could be at evenings and weekends as agreed with team members.
  • Provide feedback to markers on their performance.
  • Complete reviews of marking (ROMs) post‑results where available.
