Manchester City is seeking an outstanding Men’s 1st Team Sports Doctor to join our world-class Performance Department and play a central role in protecting, supporting and optimising the health, availability and performance of our players. This is a rare opportunity to work at the highest level of professional football, embedded within an interdisciplinary 1st team environment that exists to help players develop and the team consistently challenge for major trophies.
The successful candidate will provide expert medical care and high‑quality clinical decision‑making across training, matchdays, rehabilitation, travel and ongoing player health management.
The Role
Reporting to the Men’s 1st Team Head of Sports Medicine, you will act as a key medical practitioner within the First Team environment, helping ensure that player care, clinical governance and performance objectives remain fully aligned. You will be responsible for delivering excellent medical assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and health support to Men’s 1st Team players. This will include:
- Daily training‑ground care
- Home and away matchday medical cover
- Travel support
- Emergency care provision
- Injury and illness management
- Screening
- Pre-season and pre-signing medicals
- Specialist referrals
- Medication management
- Anti‑doping processes
- Therapeutic use exemptions
You will work closely with physiotherapy, physical performance, coaching and wider multidisciplinary colleagues to support integrated rehabilitation and return‑to‑play programmes, ensuring medical progression is aligned with the physical and football‑specific demands of the team.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for an excellent doctor with the clinical expertise, emotional intelligence and calm authority required to operate in a high‑performance sporting environment. You will bring:
- Full GMC registration with an active licence to practise in the UK
- Membership or Fellowship of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine
- A relevant postgraduate qualification in Sport and Exercise Medicine
- A current FA / EPL recognised Advanced Trauma Medical Management in Football qualification
- Demonstrable experience supporting high‑performance athletes
- Advanced clinical examination, functional assessment and sports injury management skills
- Advanced understanding of football‑specific injury and performance demands
- Excellent knowledge of the WADA Code, TUEs, and the ADAMS whereabouts system
- Proven experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Calm, clear and effective decision‑making in fast paced environments
- High professional, ethical and clinical governance standards
Experience in professional football, a postgraduate qualification in musculoskeletal ultrasound, multilingual capability and an interest in the use of AI tools and analytical software within clinical and performance environments would be advantageous.
