About the Role

The Asbestos Operative plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant removal, repair and ongoing management of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) across the whole WHG and GCC Property Estate. ACMs may be discovered during any construction, refurbishment, investment or demolition project or during day-to-day repairs and maintenance work where the Property was built or refurbished before 2000. This role demands adherence to strict health and safety standards and a proactive approach to risk management, minimising exposure to asbestos fibres for yourself and others whilst maintaining high levels of quality and professionalism.

As an Asbestos Operative you will be responsible for:

  • Working safely at all times within occupied and void properties.
  • Monitoring and recording exposure levels accurately.
  • Maintaining accurate records of asbestos removal activities.
  • Following site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
  • Adhering to Standard Procedures at all times.
  • Ensuring full compliance with Health and Safety procedures by regularly inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining your RPE to guarantee its effectiveness.
  • Handling ACMs carefully, wetted and removed without breakage where possible using hand tools and power tools.
  • Using Type-H vacuums to 'shadow vacuum' dust during removals.
  • Double bagging all waste, transporting it in specialist vans and disposing of it at our Waste Transfer Station in Darnick Street each evening.
  • Reporting any issues or safety concerns to supervisors to maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications

You will be reliable and take responsibility for your own safety and that of others ensuring safety is at the forefront of your work whether working on your own or as part of a 2 or 3-person team. Ideally you will have a previous trade or skills and experience in construction, repairs or maintenance work in a variety of domestic and non-domestic premises. You will communicate clearly to build positive relationships with team members, tenants, customers and clients by providing regular updates on job risks, safety, and progress. Attention to detail and a pride in the quality and finish of your work is essential. The cleanliness of the finished job and surrounding area is vital.

As an Asbestos Operative you will be experienced in safely removing, repairing, or managing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in line with Health and Safety procedures. You will be responsible for monitoring and recording exposure levels accurately, maintaining accurate records of asbestos removal activities, and conducting on-site risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) when required. You will ensure full compliance with Health and Safety procedures by regularly inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining PPE and RPE to guarantee their effectiveness. You will also ensure the correct handling and disposal of any contaminated materials.

Ideally you will possess a current face-fit certificate for both half-mask and full-face RPE, a current HSE medical certificate and current Work with Licensable Asbestos training certificate (dated within the past 12 months). Any additional training such as PASMA, IPAF or harness training, or H&S qualifications such as IOSH, SSSTS or CITB H&S test / CSCS card is advantageous. You must possess a full UK driving licence.
