Job Description
What you’ll do: You will support a male client living in Stoke on Trent who has a C4 Frankel C spinal cord injury resulting in tetraplegia following a car accident. Due to the nature of his injury and associated health conditions, he requires ongoing support and monitoring to ensure his safety and well-being. Your role will include assisting with daily living activities while promoting and encouraging the client’s independence wherever possible. You will also monitor for signs and symptoms of Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD) and follow the agreed management plan, working closely with guidance from the client’s spinal injury care team. The client self-directs his care and household routines, so it is important that you communicate clearly, ask how he would like tasks completed, and follow his guidance before providing support. At times, he may experience difficulties with concentration or occasional confusion, so patience and understanding are essential. The client lives with his companion dog, Mitzie, who plays an important role in supporting his emotional well-being and motivation. You will help support a calm, positive environment that encourages the client to remain active, spend time in the garden and maintain a good quality of life.
Qualifications
What we’re looking for: Someone who shows patience, understanding and has a bubbly outlook on life. The ability to adapt and has good communication skills. Carers should offer emotional reassurance and sensitively ask how they can help, including supporting me with prescribed pain relief when appropriate, as pain may contribute to low mood. Remind me of the importance of caring for my dog and gently encourage engagement by offering to sit with me in the garden or watch television together, when appropriate. To be able to do live ins with me covering annual leave as a contingency member of staff.
What I’m Looking for in Support: Full understanding and assistance with everyday living, to always include me in making decisions, offering me clear and simple choices and reminding me of the choices I have made. To engage me in conversation and ask how I am feeling, as pain can significantly affect my mood and emotional wellbeing. To be kind, caring, compassionate, excellent communication skills and naturally give a lot of encouragement, promote independence and offer choice in a simple manner. I am looking for a good conversationalist. Encouragement: I want to maintain access to social activities.
