Our client is a global commodity trading firm building a strategic Beacon platform to support real‑time position reporting across its Power & Gas business. Following a successful Proof of Concept, they are expanding their Beacon engineering team to deliver the next phase of the programme. This is a hands‑on development role focused on modelling complex commodities products and building scalable solutions within Beacon. Working closely with traders, quantitative teams and business stakeholders, successful candidates will play a key role in shaping the firm’s long‑term Beacon capability.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Develop and enhance Beacon‑based applications supporting real‑time position reporting and risk management across Power & Gas trading portfolios.
  • Build and maintain integrations to ingest and model complex commodity trading positions and structured products within Beacon.
  • Collaborate closely with traders, quantitative analysts and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Work with pricing and model outputs, ensuring accurate integration and representation within the Beacon platform.
  • Contribute directly to software engineering delivery, writing high‑quality Python and Beacon code across the development lifecycle.
  • Support the modelling of complex commodities products including renewable generation assets, storage structures, options and other non‑standard instruments.
  • Partner with global technology and trading teams to expand the platform from the US market into Europe and additional regions.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and help shape the future architecture of the firm’s Beacon ecosystem.
  • Engage confidently with front‑office stakeholders in a fast‑paced trading environment, managing challenging conversations professionally and constructively.
  • Contribute to the growth of a specialist Beacon engineering capability within a global commodities trading business.

Requirements

Essential

  • Hands‑on Beacon development experience with a proven track record of building and delivering solutions directly within the platform.
  • Strong Python development skills and the ability to contribute independently across the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience working within commodity trading, energy trading or broader commodities‑focused technology environments.
  • Solid understanding of pricing models, risk calculations and quantitative outputs, with the ability to integrate these effectively into technology platforms.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience working directly alongside front‑office users and trading teams.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a demanding, fast‑paced trading environment.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving capability and a pragmatic engineering mindset focused on delivery.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience within Power & Gas trading environments.
  • Experience modelling complex commodities products including storage, renewables, structured products and optionality.
  • Strong understanding of commodity risk and position management workflows.
  • Experience working with alternative Python‑based quant and trading platforms such as Athena or Quartz.
  • Quantitative background or exposure sufficient to understand pricing models and risk methodologies without necessarily being a dedicated quantitative developer.
  • Approximately six months or more of genuine hands‑on Beacon development experience will be considered for particularly strong software engineers.
  • Experience operating within global commodity trading organisations and interacting directly with trading desks.

Permanent hires are preferred, although strong contractors will also be considered. The role is best suited to hands‑on engineers who enjoy building technology solutions rather than managing teams, although senior individual contributors will be considered.

How to prepare for a job interview at Cititec

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Cititec uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
