The opportunity

Join our London office as a Senior Kerbside & Traffic Consultant and take a leading role in the delivery of parking, kerbside, traffic management and sustainable transport commissions for local authority and other public-sector clients.You’ll combine technical design and policy understanding with project management, client advice and commercial responsibility. The role spans Controlled Parking Zones, parking and kerbside reviews, School Streets, traffic management, moving traffic measures, road safety, TRO/TMO work and wider kerbside strategies from feasibility through to implementation.

About the role

As a Senior Kerbside & Traffic Consultant, you will lead projects and workstreams from inception to delivery, acting as a key day-to-day contact for clients. You’ll develop technically robust and practical solutions while managing scope, programme, budget, resources, risk and quality.You’ll prepare and review feasibility studies, parking and kerbside reviews, policy and strategy documents, committee/member briefings, consultation material and technical designs. You’ll also prepare fee proposals, manage variations, mentor junior colleagues and identify opportunities for further work.

Your contribution

You’ll bring together technical expertise, policy understanding, project management and strong client relationships. You’ll be comfortable moving between hands-on design, analysis, report writing and higher-level advice depending on the needs of each commission.

As a Senior Kerbside & Traffic Consultant, you will:

  • Lead parking, kerbside, traffic management and sustainable transport commissions from inception through feasibility, consultation, design, statutory processes and implementation.
  • Lead the design and review of CPZs, permit schemes, waiting and loading restrictions, parking bays, School Streets, moving traffic measures, junction protection, traffic calming, road safety and wider kerbside interventions.
  • Prepare and review CAD/GIS drawings, traffic order plans, signs and road marking layouts, schedules and technical design documentation.
  • Lead parking reviews, feasibility studies and option appraisals, using survey, monitoring, collision and operational data to develop evidence-led recommendations.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, policy and strategy documents, committee reports, member briefings, consultation reports and presentations.
  • Interpret and advise on relevant parking, traffic and kerbside legislation, statutory processes, national guidance and local authority policy.
  • Manage and coordinate TRO/TMO processes, including scheme definition, drafting inputs, consultation, objections, amendments and implementation requirements.
  • Lead client meetings, design reviews, workshops and stakeholder discussions and communicate technical or policy issues clearly to officers, elected members and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage project scope, programme, budget, resources, risk, change control and quality assurance across multiple concurrent commissions.
  • Prepare scopes, programmes and fee proposals, manage variations and support bids and framework submissions.
  • Support parking and kerbside policy development, including policy reviews, benchmarking, evidence gathering and development of practical implementation recommendations.
  • Mentor and review the work of consultants, graduates and technicians and support their professional development.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat work and account growth through strong delivery and understanding of client priorities.
  • Coordinate with highways, transport planning, engagement, survey, data and technology colleagues to provide integrated solutions.

We’re looking for someone with

  • A relevant degree, qualification or equivalent practical experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, civil engineering, parking, highways or a related discipline.
  • Experience working on UK parking, kerbside, traffic management or highway projects.
  • A good understanding of relevant traffic and parking legislation, statutory processes, standards and guidance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear reports and recommendations.
  • Experience working with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • The ability to manage priorities and deliver high-quality work to agreed programmes.
  • Significant experience delivering parking, kerbside or traffic projects, preferably for UK local authorities.
  • Proven project management capability including scope, programme, budget, resource, risk and change management.
  • Strong experience preparing technical reports, feasibility studies and client recommendations.
  • Experience preparing fee proposals and managing client relationships.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring or checking the work of junior colleagues.

Desirable Experience and Skills

  • Experience working for or closely with London boroughs, combined authorities or other UK local authorities.
  • Experience of CPZ reviews and design, parking stress and occupancy analysis, loading and servicing studies and kerbside allocation.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing or implementing TROs/TMOs and associated schedules, notices and plans.
  • Experience of School Streets, moving traffic restrictions, road safety, active travel, 20mph or traffic calming schemes.
  • Experience of parking and kerbside strategy or policy development and translating policy objectives into deliverable schemes.
  • Experience of public consultation, stakeholder engagement and working in politically sensitive environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, QGIS/ArcGIS, KeySIGN/KeyLINES or similar traffic and parking design software.
  • Experience using data visualisation or analysis tools such as Power BI.
  • Knowledge of construction-stage delivery, procurement and contractor coordination.
  • Professional membership of CIHT, TPS, ICE or another relevant institution.
