Job Overview
We are looking for an Engineering Lead to take ownership of our highways and public realm design function, with a strong emphasis on road safety. This is a senior technical and leadership role. You will lead the development and delivery of schemes including cycle routes, traffic calming, pedestrian crossings and wider public realm improvements. You will set the technical direction for the team, ensure design quality, and play a key role in growing our road safety offer across London boroughs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Leadership
- Lead the design of highways and public realm schemes from feasibility through to detailed design
- Take technical ownership of road safety interventions including traffic calming, crossings and junction improvements
- Ensure designs align with TSRGD, LTN 1/20, Manual for Streets and relevant guidance
- Road Safety Focus
- Lead on safety-led design, embedding Vision Zero principles across all projects
- Identify and develop road safety opportunities with clients
- Oversee safety audits and designer responses where required
- Project Delivery
- Manage programme, budget and resources across multiple projects
- Oversee production of drawings, reports and specifications to a high standard
- Ensure projects are deliverable and ready for construction
- Client Management
- Act as a senior point of contact for clients
- Provide clear technical advice and lead discussions on scheme development
- Support bids and contribute to growing the client base
- Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor a small design team
- Set quality standards and review outputs
- Support development of junior engineers and designers high standards in design documentation, technical drawings, and reports.

Essential
- Experience delivering highways and public realm schemes in an urban setting
- Strong background in road safety and traffic engineering
- Experience in cycle infrastructure, pedestrian schemes and traffic calming
- Ability to take schemes from feasibility through to detailed design
- Strong understanding of UK design standards and guidance
Desirable
- Chartered or working towards chartership (ICE, CIHT or similar)
- Experience working with London boroughs
- Knowledge of CPZ design, parking schemes or kerbside management
- Experience supporting delivery or construction stages
Technical Skills
- AutoCAD (essential), Civil 3D or similar
- Good understanding of TSRGD, LTN 1/20, Manual for Streets
- Experience producing clear, buildable design packages
- Ability to interpret data and use it to inform design decisions
