The opportunity
Join our London office as a Kerbside & Traffic Consultant within our growing Engineering & Kerbside team. You will help develop and deliver parking, kerbside, traffic management and sustainable transport schemes for local authority and other public-sector clients.The role combines technical design, analysis, report writing and project delivery. You’ll work on projects such as Controlled Parking Zones, parking reviews, School Streets, traffic management schemes, moving traffic measures, road safety improvements and wider kerbside strategies, taking schemes from feasibility and consultation through to design, statutory processes and implementation support.
About the role
As a Kerbside & Traffic Consultant, you will take ownership of defined projects and workstreams, producing designs, reports and recommendations and supporting projects through consultation, approvals and implementation.You’ll interpret parking, traffic and survey data, undertake site assessments, prepare CAD/GIS-based proposals and apply relevant legislation, policy and design guidance. You’ll also support client meetings, project controls, fee proposals and bids as your experience develops.
Your contribution
You’ll combine sound technical judgement with clear written communication and a practical understanding of how parking and traffic schemes move from policy and evidence through design, consultation and implementation.
As a Kerbside & Traffic Consultant, you will:
- Develop parking, kerbside and traffic management schemes from feasibility and option development through consultation, detailed design, statutory processes and implementation support.
- Design Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs), Permit Parking Areas, waiting and loading restrictions, disabled bays, loading bays, shared-use and permit bays, Carpark Redesign, School Streets, traffic calming and other kerbside or traffic measures.
- Prepare CAD and GIS-based scheme drawings, consultation plans, traffic order plans, signs and road marking layouts and other technical design outputs.
- Undertake site visits and assessments and interpret parking stress, occupancy, duration-of-stay, beat, traffic count, speed, collision and other monitoring data to inform recommendations.
- Prepare feasibility studies, option appraisal reports, parking reviews, technical notes, consultation reports and clear recommendations for clients.
- Apply relevant legislation, standards and guidance including the Road Traffic Regulation Act, Traffic Management Act, TSRGD, Traffic Signs Manual, DMRB, Manual for Streets and local authority policies as appropriate.
- Support the preparation, review and implementation of Traffic Regulation Orders / Traffic Management Orders and associated schedules, notices, plans and consultation material.
- Review consultation responses and objections and support the preparation of responses, decision reports and recommendations.
- Liaise with local authority officers, stakeholders, residents, businesses, contractors and other project partners.
- Support project managers with programme, budget, resource, risk, quality and project reporting.
- Contribute to parking, kerbside and transport policy or strategy work, including evidence reviews and benchmarking.
- Contribute to scopes, fee proposals, bids and technical submissions.
We’re looking for someone with
- A relevant degree, qualification or equivalent practical experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, civil engineering, parking, highways or a related discipline.
- Experience working on UK parking, kerbside, traffic management or highway projects.
- A good understanding of relevant traffic and parking legislation, statutory processes, standards and guidance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear reports and recommendations.
- Experience working with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams.
- The ability to manage priorities and deliver high-quality work to agreed programmes.
- Experience producing or developing parking/traffic scheme designs using AutoCAD, GIS or similar software.
- Experience interpreting traffic, parking or transport survey data.
- An understanding of TRO/TMO processes and public consultation.
- An interest in developing commercial, project management and policy skills.
Desirable Experience and Skills
- Experience working for or closely with London boroughs, combined authorities or other UK local authorities.
- Experience of CPZ reviews and design, parking stress and occupancy analysis, loading and servicing studies and kerbside allocation.
- Experience preparing, reviewing or implementing TROs/TMOs and associated schedules, notices and plans.
- Experience of School Streets, moving traffic restrictions, road safety, active travel, 20mph or traffic calming schemes.
- Experience of parking and kerbside strategy or policy development and translating policy objectives into deliverable schemes.
- Experience of public consultation, stakeholder engagement and working in politically sensitive environments.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, QGIS/ArcGIS, KeySIGN/KeyLINES or similar traffic and parking design software.
- Experience using data visualisation or analysis tools such as Power BI.
- Knowledge of construction-stage delivery, procurement and contractor coordination.
- Professional membership of CIHT, TPS, ICE or another relevant institution.
