The opportunity
Join our London office as a Highways Consultant within our Engineering & Kerbside team. You'll take ownership of the design and delivery of highways, active travel, public realm, parking and sustainable transport projects, combining sound engineering judgement with strong report writing, project coordination and client service.
About the role
You'll work across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and option development through detailed design, technical approval and construction support. Alongside design delivery, you'll prepare reports and recommendations, contribute to strategies and policy work, support client meetings and take an active role in fee proposals, bids and the commercial management of commissions.
Your contribution
You'll combine technical delivery with clear communication and growing commercial awareness. You'll be expected to take ownership of your work, understand the wider purpose of each commission and contribute to practical, well-evidenced recommendations for clients.
As a Highways Consultant, you will:
- Develop and deliver highways, active travel, junction, street, parking, kerbside and public realm schemes from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, technical approval and construction support.
- Take ownership of defined design packages, producing and checking drawings, calculations, specifications, schedules, cost information and technical outputs.
- Prepare feasibility studies, option appraisal reports, technical notes, design reports, recommendations and client presentations.
- Contribute engineering input to transport strategies, policies, business cases, funding submissions and wider client reports.
- Support project managers with scope, programme, budget, resources, change and risk, and lead the day-to-day delivery of smaller schemes or individual workstreams.
- Apply relevant UK legislation, standards and guidance, including CDM 2015, DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, TSRGD and local authority standards.
- Liaise directly with clients, stakeholders, utility companies, contractors and other disciplines, communicating technical matters clearly.
- Support consultation, technical approvals, Road Safety Audit responses, traffic order interfaces and construction-stage queries where required.
- Guide and review the work of graduates, technicians and apprentices on defined tasks.
- Prepare and contribute to fee proposals, scopes, programmes, bids and framework submissions.
- Identify potential scope changes and variations and raise them with the Project Manager or senior lead in a timely manner.
We're looking for someone with
- A relevant degree, or equivalent qualification and experience, in civil engineering, highways, transport engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience in the design and delivery of UK transport infrastructure projects.
- Good knowledge of highway and public realm design, relevant UK standards, technical approval processes and CDM 2015 duties.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD alongside relevant design software.
- Experience preparing clear technical reports, feasibility studies or option appraisals.
- The ability to manage your own workload and coordinate small work packages to programme and budget.
- Good written, verbal and presentation skills, with confidence working directly with clients and project stakeholders.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of scopes, fees, budgets and project change.
- Working towards Incorporated or Chartered status with an appropriate professional institution.
Desirable Experience and Skills
- Experience working for, or closely with, UK local authorities, combined authorities or other public‑sector clients.
- Experience of public consultation, stakeholder engagement or co‑design for transport schemes.
- Knowledge of Road Safety Audit processes, accessibility and equality considerations within scheme development.
- Experience of traffic orders, technical approvals, utility coordination, S278/S38 processes or construction‑stage support.
- Experience using AutoCAD and vehicle tracking software; Civil 3D, KeySIGN, GIS or similar software would be advantageous.
- Professional membership of an appropriate institution such as CIHT, ICE or IHE.
