Job Overview

An Digital Assets Platform Web3 Engineer must be a highly motivated and proactive hands‑on software engineer (Back End, Java Focus), have a proven ability and experience working with web applications in production. The successful candidate will be part of the core team continuing to build our Citi Integrated Digital Assets Platform (CIDAP). The ideal candidate will be a self‑driven, proactive, strong enterprise developer and resourceful team player who can comfortably work with a large team of highly motivated individuals within Citi’s larger software engineering network.

We are looking for candidates who understand how to build the backend of enterprise‑grade web applications. The successful individual should understand the basics of web3 infrastructure, blockchain technology and digital assets, and must be a strong enterprise developer of web applications. Experience and knowledge of web3 application development is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and maintain backend software components and services that integrate with blockchain networks and digital asset infrastructure.
  • Implement blockchain integrations — including node connectivity, transaction submission, on‑chain event monitoring, and wallet interactions — using enterprise Java and Web3 libraries.
  • Write, test, and deploy smart contracts in Solidity or equivalent languages, following established security and quality standards.
  • Build and maintain APIs and microservices that expose blockchain functionality to upstream platform consumers and business applications.
  • Implement asynchronous and event‑driven processing to manage transaction lifecycle, on‑chain state changes, and blockchain data synchronization.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, contributing constructive feedback and maintaining high standards of code quality, readability, and test coverage.
  • Collaborate with architects, senior engineers, and product teams to understand requirements and translate them into well‑structured, maintainable software solutions.
  • Contribute to technical documentation including component design notes, API specifications, and integration guides.
  • Support debugging, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues across the blockchain software stack in development and production environments.
  • Follow and contribute to engineering best practices, coding standards, and Agile delivery processes within the team.
  • Stay informed of developments in the blockchain and Web3 ecosystem, including protocol updates, new tooling, and emerging standards relevant to the platform.
  • Participate in sprint ceremonies — planning, stand‑ups, reviews, and retrospectives — as part of an Agile/Scrum delivery team.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in CS or Engineering; MS or PhD in computer science, or related discipline a plus.
  • Extensive experience in full software development and testing lifecycle. Experience from financial services industry is a plus.
  • Proven experience and expertise with Backend web development with Java spring.
  • Solid experience in web3 application development is a plus.
  • Solid experience and expertise developing web applications using asynchronous programming and communication.
  • Experience and expertise developing web applications adhering to best practices and patterns for reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Familiarity with web3 libraries like Web3J and Web3JS is a plus.
  • Familiarity with common and best practices for web3 applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity of Solidity code and best practices is a plus.
  • Familiarity of basics of DevOps and containerize applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity of Agile Methodology and Scrum is a plus.

Competencies/Skills

  • Blockchain Development Proficiency: Practical, hands‑on ability to develop software that interacts with blockchain networks — from smart contract deployment to on‑chain/off‑chain data integration.
  • Strong Software Engineering Fundamentals: Solid command of data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and software development best practices, with the ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code.
  • Security Awareness: Understanding of common smart contract vulnerabilities and secure coding practices relevant to on‑chain deployments in a regulated environment.
  • Collaborative Team Player: Works effectively within a distributed, cross‑functional team; communicates clearly and proactively with peers, leads, and stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Rigorous and methodical approach to testing, code quality, and documentation — especially critical given the immutable nature of blockchain deployments.
  • Curiosity & Learning Agility: Genuine interest in blockchain and Web3 technologies, with the drive to continuously learn and apply new tools, protocols, and patterns.
  • Delivery Commitment: Reliable and accountable in managing personal workstreams, meeting sprint commitments, and producing quality output within agreed timelines.
  • Tooling Familiarity: Working knowledge of standard engineering tools including Git, Jira, Jenkins, Docker, Hardhat/Foundry, and relevant observability platforms.

Development Value

As a Blockchain Software Developer on the Citi Integrated Digital Assets Platform, you will:

  • Gain hands‑on experience building production‑grade blockchain software at the scale and complexity of one of the world’s largest financial institutions.
  • Develop deep expertise across both blockchain‑native and enterprise software engineering disciplines, positioning yourself as a highly versatile and sought‑after technologist.
  • Work on meaningful, real‑world use cases in institutional digital finance — including tokenized assets, digital cash, programmable settlement, and on‑chain financial infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with and learn from experienced engineers, architects, and domain experts who are at the cutting edge of digital asset technology.
  • Access continuous learning and development opportunities, including exposure to emerging blockchain protocols, internal innovation initiatives, and cross‑functional technology programs.
  • Build a strong professional network across Citi's global technology and business community, with growing visibility as you develop your career within the firm.
